Keefe knew they didn't actually mean it. It was all part of an intricate performance. Though that didn't mean it didn't sting.

He had been given a task earlier today. Fitz and Dex both had their go and failed. Tam refused, and Keefe suspected it was because he liked Biana.

The mission he was given felt wrong in every way. He was basically being told to rip a person's heart out of their soul, then toss it in the blender and watch it shred to pieces.

He knew they weren't actually evil. No one could be that evil. Not even Alden, who was the "bad father" in real life. Keefe's father was actually nice, as was his mother.

Keefe sighed leaning back in is chair and placing his feet on his desk. His desk, his real one, in his real house. It had been some time since he had been here. He spent most his days at the Shores of Solace now.

He continued his pencil sketch of Sophie. He was always drawing that now. Whether she was laughing, crying, looking at him or facing away, he was drawing Sophie. He actually liked her. He'd always assume he'd end up alone, and he was fine with that. He never liked the elven girls here, all caught up in fancy dresses and gossip. But Sophie was different.

Probably because she grew up in the human world.

He didn't want to pretend to like her to get Black Swan secrets. He actually liked her.

That though, had been their ultimate mission from the start. Get the moonlark to deeply trust you so that they would tell you information. Yes, they already had bucket loads of information from just being in the Black Swan, but there were some things they only old the Moonlark. That what what they needed.

The first person sent on the mission was Dex. He failed horribly. When Head Council saw that the Moonlark had taken a liking to Fitz, they immediately sent him to replace Dex.

Dex had been furious. He needed to prove himself so even though he was called off the mission he still continued to pursue the Moonlark's trust.

Of course Keefe's Mom wanted him to be assigned the mission. And he was given the chance once Fitz had made some stupid decisions.

He still felt it was wrong to play with someone's feelings this way. He was pretty sure he was the only one to feel his way though, everyone else had chosen to join, he just happened to be born into a family that was in it.

This was for the greater good though. Their whole program was so much bigger than the Black Swan thought. Their main goal wasn't even what the Black Swan thought. The Black Swan hought many wrong things.

Their main goal was to bring humans and other intelligent species peacefully together. They were already working with the U.S. government. Though many humans thought their devices were alien.

What the Black Swan did get right though was that they were called the Neverseen, and they were here for change. The good change.

Keefe opened his imparter. "Show me Head Councillor Marzena-Sybella," The name was weird on his tongue, he was so used to saying her fake name.

A woman's face appeared on the screen, she had golden blond hair and ice blue eyes.

"Hello son, have you made your decision?"

"I accept my mission,"

His mother nodded, and clicked off.

Keefe let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding.

It's fine he told himself. It's for the greater good... right?
