Sophia’s POV

1 week later

Caius was discussing a vampire uprising in Europe with Aro and Marcus in the throne room leaving me to look after the babies. They were just learning how to run, thanks to their rapid growth. It was crazy to think how only 3 weeks ago they were in my stomach, and now they were chasing each other round the nursery. Rina squealed as Ben caught up with her and pulled them both to the ground laughing.

Despite their physical appearance and mental capabilities suggesting they were around a year old, neither of them were showing any signs of possessing gifts, whereas mine were stronger since I was turned a vampire. Whilst I was mortal my retro-cognition didn’t really affect me and the visions were very occasional, however since Carlisle turned me I had seen 2 visions. The first was of a woman with her dying newborn son, the second was of Caius while he was married to Athenadora, the two of them walking through a forest happy in each other’s embrace.

Marcus then joined me in the nursery looking wearier than usual.

[M] “Sophia, this may seem rather peculiar but I have to ask, you do know why Aro hired you in the first place don’t you?”

[S] “Something tells me it wasn’t because of my amazing secretarial skills.” Marcus chuckled at my remark.

[M] “No, it was because he saw what the Cullen’s had ‘created’ as he would put it, he saw the potential of the half-breeds, their strengths and power of regular immortals.”

[S] “He wanted a half-breed to use for his gain, and I have given him exactly that.” I looked up at my two beautiful children, running round the carpet, Rina pretending to be a fairy and Ben pretending to be an aeroplane, and my heart broke. Aro was going to use them for himself, to keep his position as king of vampires. He was going to corrupt them into seeing the world the way he did, the way Caius use to.

[M] “Aro is brewing in a cauldron of his own plans and dreams. He decided as soon as he met Renesmee that he wanted a hybrid of his own and the moment we arrived back in Italy he told us of how he planned to get that hybrid.”

[S] “Trick a human into falling in love with a vampire and get her pregnant.” I said almost in a trance.

[M] “Sophia I don’t mean to upset you, but I had to tell you. Aro is not pleased that the guard have ‘gotten soft’ since the arrival of the children, that you and them are not locked up in the tower like Sulpicia has been all these years, but the thing that angers him the most, he doesn’t appreciate how the skill Caius once portrayed of ambition and passionate capacity to hate is now fading, the original of letting the hybrids find their own way into the world and discarding the evidence after was ruined when he fell in love with you. I wanted to warn you that Aro will snap, he’s done it many times before over the millennia, and I fear that your family will be the ones to suffer.”

I sat there quietly on the floor. The man I loved, my husband, the father of my children, knew of Aro’s plans and didn’t tell me. He was willing to let him manipulate my babies into killing machines, but worse than that he didn’t even tell me. Tears were now running down my cheeks attracting the attention of Ben and Rina. They ran over to me, engulfing me in their tiny embraces. I held onto them tightly, feeling their body heat against my cold skin and smelling the blood that pumped through their veins.

Suddenly the nursery door opened to reveal Aro and Caius looking in on us. Caius noticed the salt water stains on my cheeks and quickly came to kneel down beside me.

“Daddy” the children screamed, jumping on him. He laughed and began to pass them onto Aro, but I stopped him.

[S] “Let me hold the children, they have to go for a nap soon anyway and I want to kiss them before they go to sleep.”

[C] “You have forever to spend time with them, why are you getting so protective now?”

[S] “They’re my babies, mother’s instinct I guess.”

Aro and Marcus left us so we could put the babies down for their nap. I kissed their heads and told them I loved them both before shutting the heavy oak door behind me. I quickly headed off to the other side of the castle, to mine and Caius bedroom, Caius trailing behind me asking if everything was alright.
