There was a lot of commotion the next morning at breakfast. The morning post arrived, and with it many owls swooped down to students carrying purple envelopes. A seventh year Ravenclaw girl was the first to open one. "I got in!" she shouted. "It's an invitation to the Sphinx club!"
Everyone scanned the swarm of owls, hoping to get an invitation of their own. Soon, students were darting to and fro, checking to see if their friends had gotten into the same clubs.
Rowan got three letters. Opening each, she found that she'd been invited to all three clubs.
"No surprises there," said Sarah, clapping her on the back. "You were bound to be one of the select few good enough for all of them."
Rowan smiled warily. "I don't know," she said. "I'm flattered, but I don't want to be involved in a club if it will distract me from studying for my O.W.L.s."
"These are academic clubs, Rowan," said Charlie from across the table. He hadn't taken his eyes from the owls swirling overhead. "They'll only help you do better on your exams. Excellent!" A tawny owl landed in front of him with a purple and gold envelope. He tore it open. "I got into the Dragon club!"
"Perfect fit," said Sarah, laughing.
"First meeting's at eight o'clock on Saturday. What do think Rowan, wanna come with me?"
"Well..."
"You should go," said Sarah. "At least check it out. No harm in that."
"Alright," said Rowan. "I suppose you're right."
After breakfast, the fifth year Gryffindors headed to Transfiguration along with the Ravenclaws. Sarah found herself walking next to Talbott, who wore a satisfied expression and carried a purple envelope in his hand.
"Nice," said Sarah, gesturing to it. "What'd you get?"
"Sphinx," he said. "Not that surprising. I've been told I'm pretty skilled in Transfiguration."
"Who told you that, a little birdie?" she said with a smirk.
He rolled his eyes. "That one's funny every time, Spellman. Did you not get one of these?" he asked, holding the envelope up.
"No."
"That's strange," said Talbott. "I'd have thought an animagus would be guaranteed a place in the sphinx club. Or does nobody know you're an animagus?" he whispered. "Have you not registered?"
"I registered," she said. "But most people don't know. It's too useful for rule-breaking to blab about."
He smirked. "Well, I'm sure you'll get one soon. I'll see you at the meetings. If I decided to join."
"Why would you not join, Talbott? It seems like a great opportunity to make new friends."
He shuddered. "Exactly. I've already got as many friends as I want, thanks."
"How many is that?"
"Two. You and Penny."
Sarah laughed. "Not anymore, Winger. When you became friends with me, you signed on to be chummy with the whole gang. Barnaby, Rowan, Andre, Tulip, Tonks, Bill..."
Talbott groaned, but didn't say anything else, as McGonagall had just arrived to start the lesson.
