Sarah ran into her first Hippogriff meeting right as it started.
"What took you so long?" Penny whispered as the club leader stood up to give the announcements. There had been no Hippogriff shout like the Dragons' roar.
"Long story," said Sarah, still fighting to catch her breath. "Let's just say that the prefects' bathroom is currently holding about eight hundred frogs, and Charlie will probably never talk to me again."
Barnaby chuckled. "I can't wait to hear this story."
Again, Sarah was taken aback by how differently the Dragons and Hippogriffs went about things. If the Dragons were controlled chaos, the hippogriffs were calming vibrance.
Kettleburn took her aside and explained that now that she was a Hippogriff, he felt she deserved the points over again for fending off the chimera. "You even kept it at bay so humanely," he said patting her on the shoulder. "Not a scratch on it!" Sarah decided not to explain that she would gladly have killed the creature if it meant saving her own life, she just wasn't skilled enough.
The main focus of the meeting was sill taming the water demon, but the handling of the creature was left largely to Barnaby, while the others stood around taking notes and offering up questions and advice. Sarah sat on the grass nearby to watch, while sipping on a cappuccino. It turned out that the Divination area really did double as a café.
She marveled at Barnaby's calm confidence as he stood waist deep in the water, putting the Kelpie through its paces. He'd removed his shoes, socks, and shirt to keep them from getting wet. Sarah would have taken this over running amok in the Dragon club any day. Looking around, she could see she wasn't the only one enjoying the show. Several students, mainly girls, had quite forgotten about their note taking in favor of watching Barnaby's gleaming muscles. Liz Tuttle's quill hand was still moving vaguely across her paper, despite the fact that she'd dropped her quill.
Not everyone was studying the kelpie, though. Penny and a few other potioneers were bustling about a half dozen cauldrons, and many students were digging around in the gardens. A group of divinations students were hard at work discussing the meaning of their tea leaves, and a jovial bloke called Thomas stood behind a counter, handing out snacks and drinks to the students that stopped by.
It turned out there was a chores list, and the students took it turns to feed and water the animals, look after the plants, mind the café, and so on. Sarah laughed to herself trying to imagine the Dragons being that organized.
There were plenty of similarities, though. For one, at the café you could also buy a Hippogriff badge. Penny explained that they'd worked out a deal with Andre so the he'd design uniforms for them as well. There was also plenty of fun and games. Everyone seemed to be happy. There was an equally diverse mix of students in the Hippogriff club, though Sarah thought there were slightly more Hufflepuffs than anyone else. She was almost sorry when the meeting was dismissed.
"What'd you think?" Barnaby asked as they left the meeting with Penny.
"It was brilliant," said Sarah. "I'll definitely have to stick around."
"I'm so glad you liked it!" said Penny. "So, what now? To the library?"
"I could use another private study session," said Barnaby, giving Sarah a less than subtle look. "My DADA essay isn't gonna write itself, you know."
"Can't," said Sarah. "The Dragon club meeting starts in a few minutes. I need to head up there now."
"Aww, then how will I write my essay?"
"Ask Rowan to help you with it."
"Rowan isn't as good at motivating me as you," he said grinning.
"Better yet, write it yourself," said Sarah, ruffling his hair. "You've come a long way in DADA. You hardly need help anymore."
"But it's not as fun by myself!"
Penny grabbed him by the arm. "Come on, let Sarah get to her meeting. I'll make sure you get your essay done. That way you have plenty of time to flirt with Sarah later."
"But..I mean...I don't..."
Sarah took advantage of his confusion to slip away. "See you two later," she said, trying to hide her smile.
