Why would I do this when there are already so many of these things out there? Because it's fucking fun. And because I can pretend this is actual content as an excuse to not update fanfics I have to put genuine effort into.

I don't ship this quite as much as Saimota, but... damn if that's not some good shit.
It's basically straight Saimota, except Maki is a tsundere instead of just insecure, and tsundere with a tragic backstory x lovable goof who takes himself way too seriously and just wants to help is a beautiful ship dynamic. Her crush on Kaito is one of the many reasons his death makes me sob uncontrollably every time I see it, and it manages to play into the story and her character development without feeling contrived. They have so many cute moments together and they care a lot about each other, and honestly the only reason I don't like it as much as Saimota is because we're in Shuichi's perspective, which makes me subconsciously root for him to get with Kaito instead of Maki. My multishipping has begun tearing me apart.
I don't think it would work out canonically just because Kaito never gives a clear answer about whether he likes Maki after she confesses to him. And he was about to die at the time, so he sort of had the right to say whatever he wanted, so there wasn't exactly an excuse for not being straighforward with her. Still, it would be really sweet if it did. It's great to watch their relationship go from 'oh god this idiot again' to 'well I guess this idiot is all right' to 'oh fuck I'm in love', even if it does end in tragedy. And Kaito ends up sacrificing himself so Maki doesn't become blackened, which is kind of the ultimate grand gesture.
TL;DR: Kaito, Maki, and Shuichi are all beautiful beings who deserve to be together. They have so much chemistry and work together so well and ahhhhh my brain is screaming. Both amazing ships, pretty similar but just different enough to make them unique and interesting on their own merit, I have no complaints.
Another kind of basic one, but Kaimaki gets a 9/10.
