I was walking through Phoenix Drops beautiful forest. I felt like I was walking through one of those auto wallpapers on computers.
"Hey!" someone called. I turned around to see Laurence running after me. "I swear, you're asking to get tased!" I glared. "By who? You? Or your daddy?" he asked.
My heart dropped out of my chest...
How'd he find out...?
"You don't know what you're talking about..." I glared, trying to walk away. He grabbed my arm and I kicked his knee in, knocking him to the ground. "Fuck!" he yelled. I breathed heavily and glared at him, "Would you rather be tased?" "This was my good leg too..." he held his knee. "Calm down, it was superficial hit. You'll be fine in an hour," I said. "So... (Y/n) Jacobson... Why did you hide your identity? Not that it did any good. Cheerleaders will find your social security number in an hour," He smirked.
I sucked my teeth in annoyance, "For the record... I never hid my identity. I just never said anything." "Uh, for the record, it's the principle of the matter," he stood up, "Just, let me get to know you... What will it hurt?"
I sighed, Mom did tell me to make friends... "Okay fine..."
I cleared my throat and we started walking, "I've been through six high schools... They start to get blurry. No point planting roots cause I'm gone in a hurry." Laurence looked at me, listening to my story, "My Mom keeps two suitcases packed in the den, so it's only a matter of when." I started dancing through the leaves, kicking them up, "I don't learn the names, don't bother with faces. All I can trust is this colorful oasis. Seems every time I'm about to despair, there's a forest right there!"
"Each park is the same! From Ok'hasis to Scaleswind, thousands of oak trees that I love to get lost in!" I smiled awkwardly, motioning towards the trees, "I pray at my altar of trees, yeah I live for that cold frozen breeze!"
Laurence laughed slightly, but I smiled softly at him, "Freeze your brain... Play in the leaves, get lost in the pain. Happiness comes, when everything numbs. Who needs cocaine?" "Freeze your brain! Freeze your brain... Care to join me?" I asked standing in a pile of leaves.
Laurence stopped at looked me, "Does your daddy know you do all this stuff?" I shrugged, "Not anymore!"
I jumped on tree stumps, "When dad was around, we lived halfway normal... But now it's just me and my mom," I shrugged, "We're less formal." I smiled at him, "I learned to cook pasta. I learned to pay rent. I learned the world doesn't owe you a cent!"
"Guess what? You're planning your future Laurence Zvhal, you'll go to some college, and become a lawyer," I explained, "But the sky's gonna hurt when it falls! So you'd better start building some walls!"
"Freeze your brain!" I yelled, birds flew around me, "Shatter your skull! Fight pain with more pain."
I grabbed Laurence's hands and made him follow me off the path, "Forget who you are! Unburden your load. I forgot in six weeks I'll be back on the road..."
I looked down, "When the voice in my head, says I'm better off dead..." "Don't open a vein!" Laurence smiled, "Just freeze your brain..." "Freeze your brain..." I smiled back, "Go on and freeze your brain..." I smirked at him, "Try it.."
We ran and jumped into a pile of leaves and laughed. "You're pretty cool, (Y/n)... I don't get why you don't want friends..." Laurence said. "Because I'm just gonna be gone in six weeks, what's the point?" I questioned. "Yeah, I guess..." Laurence sighed, "So like, is your Dad buying Phoenix Drop or something?" "What?" I questioned, "He doesn't buy towns... He makes deals, safety from other gangs for... stuff... I don't know what, I don't ask." "Why?" he asked. "I haven't spoken to my father in years, he grants me and my mom safety, but other then that... They both agreed they don't want me growing up in that kind of life," I explained.
Laurence turned and looked at me, he handed me a leaf, "Here..." I took the leaf and looked at it... It was so beautiful...

"What's this for?" I asked. "A gift... Remember Phoenix Drop when you move on..." Laurence explained. I shook my head and sighed, "I don't get it... You just met me, why are you doing this?"
Laurence smiled and gently moved a piece of hair behind my ear, "Because, whether or not you believe it, you are worth it... you're not better off dead... just be seventeen for once in your life... you deserve it..."
I smiled and Laurence handed me the leaf before walking away...
I watched as he vanished from sight and I looked down at the leaf...
