Chapter 5, When I First Saw You

The streetlights lit the sidewalk and the stars lit the night sky like fireflies.
As I walked, I had a feeling I was being followed. I stopped and looked behind me slightly.

I quickly grabbed the knife from my pocket and swung it behind me, my arm was caught and I got a good look at who it was.
"I thought Phoenix Drop was supposed to be a safe town," the women smirked.
I smirked, "Hayley. I thought you stayed in Ok'hasis where the gangs run wild."
I took the knife down and Hayley sighed at me, "I needed a change of pace. Seems like you did too... What are you doing in goodie two shoe Phoenix Drop?"
"Dads orders, besides you know me, I've always liked changing schools every 4 months," I said sarcastically.
Hayley chuckled, "It's good to see you again."
"You too..." I smiled.

I gave her a quick hug and she disappeared into the night. I didn't know much of her, no one does. She joined my fathers group six years go, she was my best friend right from the start.

Why is she here though?

The next morning, I could hear my mom talking to someone in the kitchen. I got out of bed and tiptoed over, I saw her talking to a man.
"Mom?" I questioned.
"(Y/n)! You're awake!" My mom said, a bit panicked.
"Yeah..." I rubbed my eyes, "That's what happens when we get a house with thin walls."
"Hey (Y/n)..." the man said.

I looked at him and my eyes widened, "Dad...?"
"It's me kid," he smiled.

I didn't smile, I didn't run up and hug him, all I did was stare for- what seemed, ever.
"(Y/n)... Aren't you going to say hello?" My mom asked.

I looked at her and then at him, "I gotta get to school..."
I went upstairs and quickly changed, grabbed my bag and headed to school...

Why is he here?

I walked into school and to my locker, the image of my father standing in the kitchen still burned in my mind.
"Hey," Laurence walked up to me, "You okay?"
"Uh... Yeah," I looked to him, "My Dad is home..."
"What do you mean?" Laurence asked.
"I mean like he was standing in my kitchen, drinking my coffee," I said.
"Oh shit... Are you okay?" Laurence took my bag.
I shrugged, "I mean... I haven't seen my Dad in years. I should've known something was up... After I left the cafe last night, I ran into my old friend, Haley. She runs with my Dad..."
Suddenly, an arm wrapped around me, "Talking about me?"
"Irene... Hayley?" I looked at her, "What are you doing here?"
"I never graduated High School. I'm only 17, figured I'd join that life again," Hayley smiled.

I looked at her confused, but just shook my head. At least I'd have someone familiar here.

We all walked to the cafeteria for breakfast, meeting up with everyone else.
"(Y/n)! Hey!" Aphmau smiled.
"Who's this?" Katelyn asked.
"This is Hayley, she's a friend from Ok'hasis," I smiled.
"Sup," Hayley smiled.
"Nice to meet you, come on, sit down," Katelyn offered, "We need to talk about something."
"What's up?" I asked, sitting down.
"I just need to know how many tickets I'll need to get for Fall Festival," Katelyn said, "Is Hayley gonna join us?"
"Yeah, it sounds fun," Hayley smiled.
"Perfect!" Katelyn smiled, writing a list, "I'll see you guys around."

Katelyn got up and walked away and I just smiled, "I know I haven't known her long, but that's the happiest I've seen her."
"She loves the Fall Festival," Laurence said.

With that, the bell rang and it was time for our first hour.
"What class do you have first?" I asked Hayley.
"Uh... Science," she said.
"Same here, let's go," I smiled.

We said goodbye to the others and went to Science class.
"You really like it here, don't you?" Hayley asked.
"You know... I didn't think I would, but... Something about this place seems safe," I said, "So do you wanna explain why you and my dad both show up out of nowhere?"
"Your Dad is here?" she asked.
"Yeah... I figured he was the one who sent you," I looked at her confused.

Hayley shook her head, "I've been in Phoenix Drop for months now. He didn't say anything to me."
I rolled my eyes, "Does he ever?"

Hayley chuckled, "So, it seems that Laurence has a thing for you."
"Tell me about it," I shook my head, "But don't think you're getting away from it, Katelyn seems to like you too."
"Yeah..." Hayley smiled slightly, "She's cute..."

We walked into science and sat down next to each other...

But one thing stayed in my mind... Why is she here? And why is my Dad here too? I know he said he wanted to be around more but... This is just weird...
