Laura Adams

I really wasn't expecting my day to go anything like it did.

I got up in the morning to the sound of my damned alarm clock. It took a lot of self-restrain, but I managed to hold back from smashing it to a million itty-bitty pieces. I sighed and got out of bed, reaching to turn the blasted piece of crap off. But then I heard my mother yelling from her room to me:

"YOU BETTER TURN THAT BLOODY THING OFF RIGHT NOW BEFORE I GET A MIGRAINE, LAURA ADAMS!"

I sighed, knowing she was still stupidly drunk from last night. I also knew that if I went into the living room now, she'd undoubtedly be sprawled all over our busted-up sofa, predictably with her new man. Well, new-new man. Okay, new-new-new-new-new-new-new man! It seemed like she had a different one clinging to her every other night!

I'd been about to turn off the alarm, but since Mom had asked - demanded - in such a rude, blunt way, I decided it wouldn't hurt to leave it on just a little bit longer while I got dressed for school. This was pretty much my daily routine and I expected nothing different to happen today. I'd get on the bus, go to school, deal with the endless bullying, get back on the bus at the end of the day before coming in late and going to sleep. Then the whole thing would start again.

That was what was meant to happen!

But it didn't!

Well, most of it did. Except the part about bullies - Kayla was ill today, so that gave me brief respite and a sort-of relaxing day. But as I was coming out of the school, I saw the bus pull away from the grounds, heading out onto the busy roads of New York. Without me!

"No, no, no, no, no!" I muttered. This could not be happening. But it was!

I ran out desperately after it, dropping my backpack to run "quicker".

"WAIT FOR ME! YOU FORGOT ME!" I screamed after the retreating vehicle like I was on fire. I started jumping up and down, waving my arms and yelling like a complete lunatic. "WAIT!"

It was too late now, though. I sighed, went back to pick up my stuff and began the long walk home. But just then, my phone buzzed loudly in one of my back pockets of my ripped jeans. Taking it out, I noticed it was an unknown number. I answered it anyway because I was bored.

"Hello?"

"Are you Miss Laura Adams?" a posh female voice rang  out through my ears.

"How'd you know my name?" I asked, both curious and suspicious. This could be a prank and I'd just unwittingly walked right into it!

"We were told to contact you. We rang multiple numbers and they all said to come to you because you're her daughter. We had to scroll through quite a lot of people in your mother's contact list before we came to you."

I suddenly started panicking. I'd stolen this phone since we didn't have a whole lot. My mother used it all on drinking. I'd managed to save a bit and hide it from her in my room to use, but it was only to be used for things such as food and stuff like that. We couldn't waste any and phones did cost a lot. WAIT! What if they'd found my supply of money and assumed it was also stolen? I mean, some of it was! But I had to play it cool.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm so sorry, dear. Your mother died earlier today, roughly around two o'clock in the afternoon. Your father - Richard, I believe his name is - found her," the posh lady explained, sounding like she was just reading straight off a piece of paper, not sounding sorry or sympathetic at all!

"Richard isn't my dad! He's just my mom's play toy for when she gets bored!" I snapped. I really didn't want to be associated with him in the least!
