(A/N: Told you I'd come up with something!😂)
[Y/N= your name, L/N= last name, H/C= hair colour, E/C= eye colour, H/T= hair type]
It's crisp autumn day in New York City and there's a nice, cool breeze blowing round, echoing through all the buildings and streets and rippling through your clothes. You don't notice it, though. You don't notice anything around you. The golden and orange and blood red leaves falling from the trees? Don't see it. The people crossing the road in front of you? Don't see it. The cars all rushing past? Don't hear them.
You just keep stalking down the pavement to your goal. You're on a mission and nothing is going to stop you from carrying it out. Nothing and no one. HYDRA doesn't tolerate failures. And if you fail, they'll just send someone else to fill out that role while you're sent to the chopping block. They'll just keep sending new Winter Soldiers until they finally succeed and get what they want.
That's actually why you're here. Barnes was the failure before you. A deserter. HYDRA doesn't do deserters. That's why you need to get rid of him. Teach him a lesson about what happens to deserters and why you shouldn't mess with HYDRA. After all, HYDRA always provides. They have for you since you were about five and you don't see why anyone would ever want to leave.
Except for those dreams you sometimes get. HYDRA doesn't know about those - you can't tell them or you might get into trouble. Those dreams let you see into a past life, that show you a better way of living, that show you how things are meant to be. It's only when you get those dreams that you consider leaving.
But you can't! HYDRA would come after you in the blink of an eye. You wouldn't stand a chance! Barnes has done well to last this long, but you're soon going to change that. It's only because of his stupid friend Captain America! He won't stand in your way, though. Not this time!
"Y/N?"
You freeze at the voice, not daring to move. Why do you recognise the voice?
"Y/N? L/N? Is that you?"
You spin slowly round, pivoting neatly on the balls of your feet, needing to see who it is. You need to know. You have no memories - apart from those weird dreams you sometimes get, but you're not sure if those are your memories - and even though you dare not say anything, you suspect that HYDRA is behind your blank mind. That's why you need to know. You want those memories back.
When you come eye-to-eye with the man behind you, anger boils up inside of you. It's your target! You both take a step back in surprise.
"It is you!" he gasps. "Y/N, I thought you were dead!"
He starts towards you and you quickly pull a knife from your back pocket, waving it in front of his face, making sure he's aware of what you can do. What you want to do. What you need to do. You're basically telling him to keep his distance or else you'll slit his throat. But you don't do it right now; you want more information. Like, why do you feel like you know him?
His gentle blue eyes pierce into your E/C ones. You both just awkwardly stand there, not sure what to do or say. Your H/T H/C has come loose and is blowing in the autumn breeze behind you. You decide to speak first.
"Why do I feel like I know you?"
"You do! You're like my little sister! Y/N, don't you remember me at all?"
"My name is actually Project S-7G!" you snap, taking a threatening pace towards him, "I do not know of any Y/N L/N!"
Why does his hurt expression crush your heart? Why do you not want to hurt him? Why is your rage slowly dying down? You don't like all these new emotions. You've never felt these things before and it's honestly kind of scaring you a bit.
"You are Y/N," Barnes says softly, edging slowly towards you, not wanting to scare you into doing something regrettable. "Don't you remember? HYDRA took you from your home when you were only five-years-old because you had strange powers. You were raised by them and I took you under my wing. We shared a cell together and I taught you to fight. Don't you remember any of that?"
"I...Don't know," you admit in a defeated voice, sighing deeply and trying hard not to cry. Only babies cry! You're not a baby! You're HYDRA's top agent!
"BUCKY!" you hear a yell from behind and see the man in front of you tense.
"Steve! Don't!"
But it's too late. You feel a thump across the back of your head and your world goes black as you fall heavily to the floor, but Bucky catches you before you can hit the ground and hurt yourself.
"Steve! What were you-"
"She had a knife!"
"I'm very well aware of that!"
"I was only trying to stop her from killing you!" the two men argue back and forth.
Bucky bites back an angry retort, instead throwing you over his shoulder as if you weigh nothing and walking off with your unconscious form towards the Avengers compound, telling Steve he's going to get you all patched up and see if you're okay.
Steve, sensing he's offended his best friend in some way, hurries to catch up with him.
"You know her?" he asks, gesturing with his head to you.
"A HYDRA experiment like me. She's basically my little sister, we're that close. Or, we were! HYDRA's brainwashed her like they did to me!"
"She doesn't look that old."
"She's not. She's sixteen!" Bucky says sadly, holding you closer protectively as if that can make everything bad go away.
*87 <--- Time skip brought to you by Phineas from Phineas and Ferb
You open your eyes slowly. You seem to be in a hospital bed. But where? You groan as you try to move and sense movement next to you.
He's there by your side. Barnes! What's he doing here?
"Y/N? You're awake? How are you feeling? Are you okay?" he asks, moving closer to you and holding your hand, stroking little circles into your palms.
This is weird. You've never had this kind of contact with anyone before! Nobody's ever shown you affection! It's totally foreign to you. Bucky feels you tense and sighs.
"I want to remember. I want to know why I know you," you say to the man sat next to you. He nods.
"I know, I know. I'll help you remember," he says and you can tell he's serious. He really will help. No one has ever helped you before - you've always had to do things yourself, figure things out on your own, comfort yourself. Everything. But this man that you don't even know says he'll help you!
"How?"
"I know a man called T'Challa in a place called Wakanda who can help you, Y/N. It will be alright soon, you'll see," he says soothingly. And you believe him. You believe you'll get better and have all your memories back and not have to live in fear anymore.
