It was mid-December of 1937 and it was a cold morning in New York City. It was only about 35° f. Y/N slowly began to wake up to how cold it was in the room. I sat up in my bed and wrapped my blanket around myself. For how cold it was in the room, it didn't really help with me waking up. It took me a while to even get the strength to leave my bed to check the heater.
"Damn it.." I whispered to myself. "Of all times it could break down.. why now?" I added. After I ate breakfast, which consisted of eggs with cheese and toast, I finally got dressed to head out. The streets were crowded with people, which was pretty usual. As I walked down the streets, I wrapped my coat tighter around my body and hugged myself to keep warm. I eventually found a not so busy bar and made the decision of only having a drink or two. Only a couple of men were singing because they were drunk.
I ordered myself a drink before finding an empty stool to sit at. I felt a hand be placed on my back and flinched at the touch. "Awe, why would such a beautiful woman be flinching at my touch?" the man asked. I didn't make eye contact with him as I took a sip of the alcohol. "Maybe because I don't know you and you're drunk." I replied shortly before pushing his hand away from my back.
"Oh come on, the name is John. John Williams. Now you know my name. May I know yours?" John asked. I finally turned in my stool to face him. "No, you may not. Now, can you leave me alone?" I asked. "You look cold, you could come by my place." John insisted. "Enough." I answered. "Now go." I added. John leaned against the counter and smiled at me. "Playing hard to get I see." John said. I turned back around and took another sip of my drink.
"She said enough." I looked around to see who had said that and saw another man standing next to me. I studied his features. His eyes were a steel blue, he was tall but not super tall. John looked at him. "And you are?" John asked. "Her boyfriend. Now go.." The man said, placing a hand on my waist. "Prove it." John stated, puffing his chest out and taking a stance. I looked at the man and he looked back at me. "Yeah. That's what I thought." John added, grabbing my hand to pull me out of my seat. I resisted and before I knew it, a fight had begun.
The man had punched John in the jaw. I gasped and stood up as I watched John take a swing at the man. A few people had grabbed John and pulled him out of the bar. "Sorry about that.. he tends to do that with women.." the bartender explained. "It's okay.." I whispered. Idiot.. I thought to myself. "Are you okay?" The man asked. I looked over at him and gave him a small smile. "Yes.. but you really didn't need to do that.. I had it under control." I answered. "James Barnes. But you can just call me Bucky." he introduced. "And yours?"
"Y/N L/N." I said. "Care to go on a walk?" Bucky asked. I looked down at my drink then looked back at Bucky. "Unless you want to finish that drink first." Bucky chuckled. I let out a small giggle and finished the drink. "I guess I'm ready for that walk now." Bucky smiled warmly as he held out his arm for me to take. I linked my arm with his, it was this moment I had realized our height differences. I've never felt shorter..
Bucky lead me through the bar and out the door. "You know.. if you're not too busy later, we could go dancing. It would be a double date. My friend Steve would be with us and another girl which would be his date." Bucky suggested, I thought for a moment. "No, I don't think I have anything going on.. dancing sounds wonderful." I smiled.
