1943
For the past six years, Bucky and I have become very close to each other. We saw each other almost everyday and night. I had even become good friends with Steve. Even though Steve and I were friends, he was always his awkward little self trying to find ways to join the Army.
I had also finally sided with Y/F/N. If I wasn't with Bucky or Steve, I was with her. She would talk to me about Bucky all the time and how 'Cute we were together..'
"You know he has feelings for you. He's been hinting at you since you two met." Y/F/N stated shortly. "And I know you have feelings for him and I know you do cause you were a real bitch to me when we first met. You tried taking him from me." I said. "Multiple times, may I add!"
"You feel the same way don't you?" She asked. I look down embarrassed. A smile crept onto her face and she gasped. "You do! Why don't you two.. you know.. get together?" I shook my head. "He's enlisted now. I'm rarely going to ever see him."
Y/F/N huffed at me. "So? Better now than never." She said. "Besides, you know how sweet it would be when he got back from war-" I flinched at her words before letting her continue. "You run up to each other and he just holds you close?"
I scrunched my nose as she explained. I could clearly tell that she has thought about doing this with him before. "Yeah yeah." I waved my hand dismissively. A knock came to the door and we turned our heads. I walked over to it and opened it.
"Hello, ladies." Bucky said. "Sergeant." I replied. He was in his uniform and we watched him as he took off his cover and placed it under his left arm. "Y/F/N, could you give us a moment? Alone?" He suggested.
She gave him a smile and nodded before leaving the apartment. I walked over to my couch and Bucky let himself in, shutting the door quietly behind him. He walked over and sat down next to me. "Have they given you your orders yet?" I asked.
Bucky looked at me and smiled. "Yeah.. Sergeant James Barnes. I ship out to England in a few days." He answered. I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I wasn't ready for him to leave just yet. "I'm going to try and be with you as much as I can till I leave. I promise.."
I let out a sniffle as a tear had rolled down my face. Bucky had looked down before holding out his arm. I leaned into him and rested my head on his shoulder. "What's wrong?"
I sat up and quickly wiped the few tears that had fallen. "I just don't think I'm ready for you to leave.. it's just going to be me.. Steve.. and Y/F/N.." I whispered. Bucky let out sigh. "Or just you and Y/F/N if Steve keeps trying to lie to get into the Army." Bucky said. "I swear to god that kids gonna get caught some day."
"I promise I'll be back before you know it, snowflake." He added. I lightly hit him and gave him a small smile. I always loved it when he called me that but I never let it show. Bucky wrapped his arm around me again. "I don't know what I'm going to do without you.."
For the next few days, Steve, Y/F/N, and I spent as much time as we could with Bucky. When the last night came, he was in his uniform. The four of us walked together down the streets of New York. Steve had his hands stuffed in his pockets like usual. Y/F/N had her arm linked with Bucky's and he had his arm wrapped around my waist.
"So where are we going..?" Steve asked. Bucky looked down at the newspaper that was in hand. I'm sure if he wasn't holding the newspaper, Y/F/N would holding his hand and not linking arms. "The future." Bucky said, unlinking his arm with Y/F/N to hand Steve the newspaper.
Steve took it and unfolded it to read what it says. World Exposition of Tomorrow. Steve looked up at Bucky and shook his head. Y/F/N linked her arm back with Buckys as he looked down at me. "You know.. I was thinking we could go dancing one last time before I leave for England first thing tomorrow.."
I looked up at him and smiled. "Fine.." I said. When we arrived to 'The Future' as Bucky described it, the show was about to begin. "Look! It's starting!" I exclaimed, grabbing Bucky's hand, and racing to try and get as close to the front as we could. Bucky smiled and followed closely behind. Y/F/N followed Bucky and Steve stayed behind. He went to go get a snack.
Eventually Steve found us and stood behind the three of us. He offered Y/F/N a piece but she gave him a look. "Ladies and gentlemen! Howard Stark!" A woman said over the microphone and presented the side of the stage.
A man walked out on stage with about four women and waved to the crowd, a loud cheer came from them. Howard pulled one of the ladies close to him and placed a kiss on her lips. He broke the kiss and wiped away the lipstick with a white handkerchief.
"What if I told you, in a few short years, your automobile won't even have to touch the ground.. at all." Stark moved out of the way to present the Stark Industries automobile. "Thanks Mandy." Stark said as he watched the women take the wheels off the car. "With Stark robotic reversion technology, you'll be able to do just that." He announced.
Stark looked down and flipped the switch in front of him and the car began to float. "Holy cow.." Bucky admired. After a few moments, the car had fallen back down to the ground. "I did say a few years, didn't I?" Stark asked. "Hey Steve, we're taki-" He turned around and noticed Steve was gone.
"You know, you still have time to tell him.." Y/F/N said to me, knowing damn well Bucky was still next to me. "Tell me what?" Bucky asked, turning back to face me. "Nothing. Go find Steve." I laughed and pushed him away.
Bucky smiled and walked away to find Steve. I stood there and talked with Y/F/N. Eventually we began walking and found Steve and Bucky. "Hey, Sarge! We going dancing?" Bucky turned and faced us and smiled. "Yes we are!" He turned back to Steve to finish up the conversation.
Bucky began walking to us as Steve said something. He lifted his arm and saluted before turning back to us. "Come on girls, they're playing our song." He smiled, wrapping his arm around my waist. "Well, my song, but ok." I giggled. "You're song?" Y/F/N asked. I nodded. "Yes. This is my favorite song. It's called 'In a Sentimental Mood' it's by Duke Ellington."
"Actually, I think I'm going to head home. I have work in the morning." Y/F/N said as she looked to me and winked. I rolled my eyes in return and said goodbye. "Well.. shall we dance, Y/N?" Bucky asked, holding out his hand. I smiled and took it and blushed as he pulled me close. I fought tears because I might never see him again. But there was always the possibility.
I moved my arms to wrap them around his neck and held him tightly. Within moments, the tears I was holding back, finally came streaming down my face. "I don't want you to leave.." I choked out, looking up at him.
Bucky lifted his hand to wipe my tears. "I promised you that I will be back." He replied quietly, resting his forehead on mine. "Why is this so important to you? Why don't you want me to leave?" Bucky asked.
I looked into his steel blue eyes and chewed my lip. Do I tell him? Do I lie? "Because.. I've already lost enough. I don't need to lose you too." I said. Bucky nodded even though he didn't believe me. "I promise.. that's all it is."
As the song finished, I decided to walk with Bucky back to my apartment. We just barely halfway back when gunshots echoed through the streets. I screamed as I looked at Bucky, fear in both of our eyes.
