Chapter 10
My wolf body was completely still. My nose raised high in the air, I took a big sniff. My senses were correct; I was in the right spot. My prey was just within my reach.
The air was cool, yet nothing to complain about against my warm fur. I heard... Nothing. The air was frozen in it's tracks, as if it knew I needed to concentrate. I slowly staggered forwards, deeper into the woods.
It was hard to get a good grip with my footing as I wandered closer to the deer. The ground was muddy and wet, not to mention slippery. I looked my frightened prey right into the eyes. I flashed my canines and let out a low growl. I kicked back the leaves under my paws and crouched on my hind legs.
Without a second thought, I pounced.
My canines dug deep into flesh, but not the flesh I was expecting to hit. I removed my canines, and, the adrenaline pumping, my body switched into a human's. Embarrassed, I ran over behind a big oak tree that had a stash of clothes.
My palms throbbed from the cold and I lost my footing numerous times. After quickly throwing on an outfit, I ran out from behind the tree, teeth bared. I knew who I was supposed to kill this time. "Damn you, Zac!"
He was lying there next to the dead deer, fully clothed and in human form. His back was hunched and I could hear a gruesome slurping noise coming from his mouth. The noise broke and he turned to face me.
His eyes turned to anger and he stood up, starting towards me.
"Me? You sunk your freaking teeth into my back!"
I growled. "You sunk your teeth into my prey!"
Zac grinned. "And it tastes good."
Aggravated, I ran at him with my claws extended and jumped on him. He laughed and rolled me over, flinging me into the snow. I grabbed his shirt and threw him off of the deer, happily enjoying it's meat; it felt odd in human form, but meat was meat.
I could feel the warm blood trickling down my chin; it was so good. I should have taken it back to the rest of the pack, but I was too greedy. And, knowing me, I was probably going to catch another one soon.
I heard deep laughter over my shoulder and then suddenly I was rolling around on the forest floor with Zac, snow soaking my clothes. Our bodies came to a stop and I felt weight on top of me. When I opened my eyes I was looking into Zac's, that were only about an inch away from mine.
"Hey. You gonna eat the rest of that?" he asked, smiling, and nudged his chin in the deer's direction. I nervously laughed and tipped him off of me, sitting up. My stomach felt all weird, and the back of my head was hot. He was looking at me oddly...
I stood up and brushed the snowflakes off my sweater. "What are you staring at?"
When I say staring I literally mean staring; he didn't even acknowledge my remark. I snapped at him and he blinked. "Sorry... what... what happened?" I
sighed and messily gathered my hair into a make-shift bun. "I have to go, Zac. I don't know what you're going to be doing tonight, but I have plans. And, make sure you never go for my kill again; you'll be sorry."
A cheeky grin found its way to my face and I turned around to leave.
I had a... date.
I was nervously pacing back and forth in my room, deciding what to do. Stay, or go. I was the one who asked him. That means if anyone should be standing someone up it should be him, right? But I couldn't go out with him knowing that there was a slight chance that the others could find out. Then I wouldn't be elected Alpha for sure.
It was utterly obvious which one was more important - but I couldn't seem to say no to him! It was as if I was suddenly being drawn towards him somehow... I also couldn't tell the rest of the pack that, especially if it didn't even make sense to me.
I sat down on my bed and frowned. Then I thought about the outcomes if I didn't go, and the outcomes if I did go (and I was not spotted).
The possibilities that all would go well ended up being in the favor of going on the date, so I decided to try my luck and pick out a nice outfit.
After raiding my closet for about half an hour I finally decided on a pretty beige dress with little red flowers all over it.
Istraightened my hair and put on some red flats to match the dress. I heard a honk and I looked out the window - Tyler was sitting in a silver car, smiling up at me. I smiled back and motioned to him, 'one second'. I carefully walked down the staircase and grabbed my purse. I took a deep breath before closing the door shut behind me.
Truthfully, I was just giddy. I was going out with a such a hottie tonight... and did I mention that he could change forms?
When I reached the car, Tyler was holding my door open for me, a huge grin on his face.
"Hi there, gorgeous," he said as he looked me up and down.
I responded with a hi, then got in and hastily closed the door. Some of my friends lived in this neighbourhood; I had to be careful. Until after the election at least.
Tyler got in the driver's side, then eyed me suspiciouisly. "What was that about?"
"Nothing. Just go." My remark ended the conversation, and as we drove off, I sighed.
This was it.
No turning back now.
