I Think Not

Around 4:30 I started getting ready for the football game. This is the fifth one this year so far, and I've been to all of them. But this is the first one I'm going to with Piper, Raven, and Drew. I guess Jaxton might be there too.

I hear a car honk out front and see that Raven is driving and Piper is sticking her head out of the passenger's window grinning at me. I finish putting my shoes on then run out to the car. The side door opens and Jaxton walks out.

Raven pokes her head around.

"Sorry, you have to sit in the middle," Raven says.

"That's fine," I answer.

I crawl into the car and buckle into the middle. Jaxton climbs in behind me and shoves me over. I squish awkwardly against Drew.

I turn towards Drew and grin at him lopsidedly.

"Well, this is comfortable."

He laughs and shoves me back towards Jaxton.

The car starts after Jaxton buckles and we start on our way there. We all laugh and talk, well, except for Jaxton.

When we are almost to the school, Drew shouts, "Sandwich!" And pushes into me.

I am surprised as Jaxton pushes me back, both of them crushing me into dust.

I am even more surprised when the entire car bursts out laughing, even Jaxton.

The sound of his laughter is really low and husky. I realize then that I like the sound of his laughter.

Everyone calms down as we reach the school.

It is completely packed.

It took us about five minutes to find a spot to park, but we eventually got into the area.

We stop beside the concession stand.

"Who all's getting food?" Piper asks.

"I'm in," Jaxton says.

"As long as you are paying." Drew laughs with a grin.

"Alright. I just have to go talk to Ashton before the game starts.

Piper groans and Jaxton frowns, but I pay them no mind.

"I'll be right back," I say.

I walk across the paths and get to the field. I look around for Ash's number, 22.

I see it and wave my arm in the air.

"Ashton!" I shout, smiling widely.

He sees me and some emotion I can't tell crosses his face. But just as quickly as it got there, it vanished. He grins and walks over to me.

"Hey, babe." He says.

"Hey! How are you feeling?"

"I'm pretty confident in our skills. I'm sure we're gonna win this game."

"Aww, I bet you guys will too. How are the freshies fairing?"

"They aren't doing so hot but we can whip them into shape soon."

The coach yells for Ashton.

"I've gotta go, bye babe."

"Bye! Good luck!"

He smiles at me then turns around and jogs over to his teammates. I watch him for a second, then walk back over to the concessions.

"Alright," Raven says, "Let's get some food!"

Jaxton mumbles something under his breath.

"What was that?" I ask.

"Nothing."

"No, what was it?"

"I don't understand how you can put up with that guy." He says, crossing his arms.

"You mean Ash? He's so sweet."

"Yeah, right." Jaxton agrees sarcastically.

"Why do you hate him so much?"

"It doesn't matter."

"No, tell me why."

"Drop it." He growls.

I decide to take a hint and let go.

"Alright, next." The lady behind the counter says.

I look over the menu and decide I want a pretzel with cheese. I feel around for my wallet but can't find it.

"I can't find my money," I say sadly.

Piper pulls out her purse but before she can hand me the money Jax leans forward and gives a five to the cashier.

"Can we have a bag of popcorn too?"

The lady smiles and gives him the change then makes our food. She hands it to us and tells us to have a nice day.

Jaxton and I stand off to the side to wait for our friends.

"Thank you," I say to him quietly.

"I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier." He responds.

"I deserved it."

"No, you didn't. I just really don't like that guy." He says.

We both stay silent then until Piper, Raven, and Drew finish.

"Alright, let's go find some seats," Piper exclaims.

We searched for a while for some seats together, but eventually found five together near the top. Drew sits at the edge, with Raven next to him, then Piper, Me, and Jaxton.

The first quarter of the game is usually pretty boring, and the other team is smoking us. We are losing by quite a bit. But I have faith in the team and sure enough, when the second quarter starts, our team scores a lot.

I glance down at my food and, to my dismay, see that it's all gone. I sadly look around until I spot the bag of popcorn next to Jaxton.

I reach over and steal a piece of the popcorn from Jaxton.

He doesn't notice.

I steal three more and he still doesn't notice.

So I just continue, taking more and more of his popcorn throughout the second quarter.

When the fourth quarter starts, I reach over to grab another piece, when he snatches my hand out of the air and holds it.

His hand is super warm.

And it's a lot bigger than mine.

"I think that's my popcorn." He says quietly.

His face looks grumpy and there is a frown on his mouth, but I see the amusement in his eyes.

"I think not," I say while using my other hand to take another piece of popcorn.

He grabs that hand too, causing me to turn towards him.

Only then do I notice how close we are sitting.

He seems to notice too, and lets go of my hands.

We both turn back towards the field and scoot away from each other.

After a few minutes, I sneak my hand back over to Jaxton's bag and see another piece of popcorn.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see him smile and push his popcorn bag slightly over towards me more.

I grin and go back to watching the game.
