My breathing is labored, my chest rises and falls, and my feet persistently push forward as my heart beats wildly, sweat drenching my face. I reach my street, turn left, and carry on to complete my daily run, gradually decelerating as I approach my house.

Catching my breath for a minute, I held my knees before heading inside. The silence reminded me that my mother was still at work, so I decided to head upstairs for a shower, as I was smelling quite unpleasant.

I took out my earbuds and entered my bedroom, then something unusual caught my eye: my dresser drawer was ajar. I approached and saw it was my underwear drawer, my eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Who had rifled through my dresser? Then it occurred to me that it might have been my mom, so with a shrug, I dismissed the thought and proceeded to take a shower.

________

Taking a cold shower immensely improved my mood, and after dressing in a huge pajama shirt, I headed downstairs to satiate my growling stomach. To my surprise, I found my mom in the kitchen, greeting me with a huge grin.

I smiled "What's going on?" I asked

"Remember when I told you I was waiting for a promotion that required me to travel?" She asked, and I nodded, anticipation building as the excitement on her face promised a golden answer.

"Yeah"

Her grin grew "I got it! They offered me the position before I left work"

I squealed, my mouth agape, "Mom, that's great!" I exclaimed.

"Thank you, Mae, so this means I have to go pack and you need to keep the promise you made to me," She said sternly

"I won't let you down Mom, and I'm happy for you"

We hugged and Mom pulled back holding my shoulders "We have to celebrate. Why won't you get dressed and we'll go out for dinner"

I grinned "Yes! I'll go do that"

After parting ways, I dashed to my bedroom, swiftly changed out of my clothes, and chose an outfit from my closet: stylish dress pants paired with a collared button-up linen crop top. My mom had suggested dressing in something formal yet fashionable, and that's exactly what I did.

Good thing I showered

I finished by hooking on a pair of diamond earrings Jake bought me for my eighteenth birthday and grabbed a pair of heels before leaving my room and meeting up with Mom who stood by the front door texting on her phone.

"I'm ready" I exclaimed

She glanced up at me and smiled "You look, beautiful honey, Let's go"

We left the house together, and I could sense the happiness my mom felt. This job was significant to her; it demanded impeccable skills and her expertise was in high demand. She mentioned that these people were incredibly wealthy and energetic. How could she not be nervous? If I were in her shoes, I'd be extremely anxious.

Wow! Mom selected a lavish restaurant. The interior boasted a cozy and elegant ambiance, with people crowding the space, which made me anxious about securing a table.

I had never been here before, but I was certain Mom had, as she navigated with confidence. As we walked, I took in the sights, scanning the area while clutching my bag tightly in front of me.

"This place is nice Mom, "I'm pleased that she provided me with that valuable information, and it was beneficial to dress nicely. The men and women were all dressed lavishly, and some glanced at us with distaste and curiosity.

Finally, we settled at an empty table near the booths. As we took our seats, Mom sighed contentedly and removed her jacket, while I kept admiring the restaurant. However, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, realizing it was probably the same people who had stared at us upon our entrance.

I shrugged it off, and soon a waiter came to our table, offering two menus with a friendly smile. He appeared to be in his early thirties.

"Would you like to hear the specials ladies or would you like more time?"

"No thank you, We'll order our drinks for now," Mom said, He nodded and Mom let me go first.

He looks at me "I'll have sparkling water with two limes please"

"And I'll take two glasses of your best champagne, Please"

"Certainly, I'll be right back" He smiled turning on his heel.

I looked at her with my eyebrow raised "Two? Being wild tonight Mom" I smiled mischievously

"Don't be silly, the second one is for you" Her revelation sparked my expression into one of surprise.

"Are you serious?" I grinned and she nods

"I'm allowing it just for tonight, Mae. You must not drink in my absence. In fact, you can only purchase groceries and supplies using my debit card, and I will review the transactions to ensure you do not buy any alcohol or cigarettes. You understand me?"

My mother spoke with such gravity that I concurred and promised her I would not disappoint her. It's the most important aspect I could ever want from her.

Suddenly a presence visited our table, I was staring at my phone expecting it to be the waiter instead I looked up and saw a face that I wouldn't have expected tonight.

He smiled down at us wearing a black pristine suit, He stared at us, especially at me noticing his hungry strange dark eyes.

"Mr. Wilson, What a surprise" Mom spoke first with a cordial voice, I nervously smiled at him and started playing with my fingers beneath the table. What the hell is he doing here?

"Hello ladies, I saw two familiar faces so I took it upon myself to come to say hello," He said

Mom kept a friendly grin and I haven't felt so uncomfortable, I'm still not surprised to see his face once again. I'm going on a streak right now and I want it to break already.

"That's nice and my daughter and I are just having a celebratory dinner that's all" She replied and all I did was smile and let my mother do the talking, I wasn't in the mood to make small talk with him.

"That's nice, What are you celebrating?" He asked, noticing him continuing to stare at me.

Don't tell him, don't tell him...

"A promotion, Which means I will be leaving for London soon" Mom spoke with pride, which caused Kyle to raise his eyebrows at her, then he fixed his gaze on me. A flicker of something passed through his eyes, and I gulped, resenting that Mom had shared our business with him.

"That's very interesting, Mrs, Estacado and I've been it's beautiful around this time of year. Well, I'll leave you ladies be and get back to my men. Enjoy and congrats"

Kyle gave a slight bow of his head and then departed from our table. I exhaled deeply while Mom hummed, starting to text on her cell phone. My eyes followed where he went and I found him sitting in the far corner of the restaurant with four of his friends In a booth.

He was already gazing at me with dark eyes as he sipped from his glass. A shiver ran up my spine, and it seemed as though he anticipated my glance, which is why he raised his glass.

Then he winked and the waiter finally came with our drinks breaking our field of view, Kyle Wilson is a plain-as-day eerie and my gut felt it.

I decided to let it go so I can have a good night with my mother before she leaves for London... But I felt his eyes burn my frame all night.
