As they move around the house Daichi notices just how big the house actually is.
"I didn't pay much attention to the house as we were outside... this house is big and beautiful with nice furniture. I had no idea Suga's family has that much money..."
Arriving at Suga's room both take a seat and start enjoying their meal.
"First of all I have to apologize-"
"No. No you don't."
"Yes, I do, Daichi-"
"Suga", he shakes his head slightly "You don't have to constantly apologize for everything."
"... Yeah, I know... but hear me out please, ok?"
"Of course."
"...", Suga seems to be thinking about the right approach to the topic at hand before finally starting to speak "Since I'm not sure about where to start I'll start with something a little more obvious: the house. And the food. You might have already noticed that the house is quite big and probably expensive and the food is self-made with fresh ingredients which probably wasn't cheap either, right?"
Daichi nods.
"Well that's because the ancestors of my mother were nobles."
-Note from the author: There really was a family of nobles in Japan with the last name Sugawara. That's why I decided to let this play into the story. -
After a small pause Suga adds "They had a lot of money and so does she. As she was younger she found out about that and got obsessed with the history of her family. She read a lot of books and did research were she could. Ever since then saw herself as a sort of Queen who has to rebuild her fallen empire..."
Suga falls silent for a second and Daichi decides to interfere. He comes closer to his boyfriend, lays a hand on his lap and gently says "You don't have to-"
"I know. But I want to. I want you to know... unless you don't want to hear it-"
"I do, Suga. Keep talking.", he interrupts.
Both take a deep breath together before Suga continues. "She met my father who was on a business trip and paid him to marry her and have children since he had good looks. My father didn't have much time and would have only slept with my mother if she wouldn't have insisted on a marriage for the honor of her family..." at this point Suga manages to fight off tears. Daichi takes his hand. "She wanted a daughter. A princess that she can love and care for. She wanted to decide who she'll get to marry one day and maybe even send her to another country to marry into a noble family so that my mother can have a noble status again... I'm sure you can imagine the disappointment my mother felt as I was born... She never talked to me, looked at me, cared for me... not once... I was fine with it. I didn't know she was supposed to. I didn't know she was my mother. I only ever knew the nice man who was my father and the shy woman which was my mother. Even though I only saw my father as nice because he gave me food and a blanket... nowadays I would have called children like me orphans but back then that was normal for me. As I turned five my father left and went back to his home country which triggered something in my mother and in her way of thinking. She never saw my father again; neither did I... and she said she would not want to have anything to do with another man ever again even though I feel like she needs someone... but at least she started talking to me. Very slowly and not much at the beginning. Just casual conversations like How are you? Do you like the weather? What's your favorite color? ...basic conversations you have with people you just met... we just met... I met my mother as I was five... she still denied me as her child, that's why. We became friends... At one point she told me about all this. She secretly tried to raise me into the princess she couldn't have by teaching me things like walking with books on the head, dancing, cooking, playing the violin and cleaning... there's more but I don't want to get into that now... We're like best friends but I doubt we'll ever be family. I mean... I know she's my mother, she knows I'm her son, I see her as family but I know that we'll never have a real family relationship. We're roommates of some sort. It's fine for me. You don't have to pity me, really. I pity myself enough. But It's really fine. I'm not sure if I can truly accept her as a mother either way, so I'm glad and happy with the way it is now. Sometimes she has a bit of a throwback and before things get worse we have a phrase I can use to tell her"Calm down. Go away and take your time to come back. Relax." It's what I said before she left the kitchen "The weather is perfect for reading, don't you think?" ... It's supposed to remind her of her "research phase" which started all of this... Sometimes it takes about ten minutes and sometimes she disappears for days... her record is nine days."
"That's over a week!"
Suga was so lost in his own words that he forgot that Daichi was still there. So someone suddenly speaking up scared him and he realizes that he didn't even noticed when Daichi started crying a bit.
"Damnit!", Suga thought before getting up to get tissues. He hands him a few. "There..."
"Thanks", Daichi responds while taking the tissues.
"I'm sorry, Daichi, I got distracted and-"
"I said you don't have to apologize!"
"And I said you don't have to pity me!"
Daichi lets out a sigh knowing very well that Suga wouldn't lose this argument.
-
The door to Suga's room suddenly opens and his mother hands each boy a glass of water.
"Here you go. You have to stay hydrated boys!"
"Thanks, mom!", Suga responds.
As the mothers gaze falls upon Daichi and she notices his red eyes she asks "Is everything ok with you?"
"Yes, yes it's just a simple allergy. Don't worry", Suga answers for Daichi and tries to get his mother to leave.
"Ah well then. Let me know if you need something.", she says as she leaves the room again.
"Phew! Well... how's the Sushi?"
"It's really great", Daichi replies and Suga smiles at him in response as if their past conversation never happened. Daichi feels like he should just drop the topic and bring it up again some other time if it is needed.
For now they should just enjoy their afternoon together and focus on something else.
