In the Shadows

Chapter 3: Are you new?

"Hi I'm Kathyrn," I reply kindly. I mean there's no getting around this now.

"Are you new?" James asks. I am slightly offended but I am impressed in my hiding skills. Especially considering that I go to a small school.

I then reply, "Nope I've been going since the beginning of junior year." Meaning I've been going here for just over a year, the fall after the incident.

"Oh I can't believe I've never met you." He states genuinely confused at the fact he doesn't know someone in his graduating class.

" I mean you're the first to give me a second glance, but then again I make it a point to go unnoticed." I shoot back. How did he even get in this class, after all aren't all jocks supposed to be meat headed? Not trying to be a bitch or anything but I mean this class is filled with nerdy seniors and a handful of kid genius juniors, and he is popular player James Knight.

He then pulls out a book to read and I catch a glimpse of the plain white cover. Oh. My. God. He is not. HE IS NOT. Are you really testing me God? This hot guy is reading one of my favorite classics. Catcher in the Rye. Okay stay calm. Okay this is really difficult. Do not fangirl Kathryn. I repeat, DO NOT FANGIRL. Repressing my urges I pull out a copy of 1984 to reread. After the bell rings I mark my spot at about half-way through because of my fast reading ninja skills. Sorry I am such a dork.

The next day I make my way to English and take my usual seat finding James already in the seat next to mine and checking his phone. I pull out my new John Green book that I started last night. I stayed up late to read it, but fell asleep half way through. I was really into it and jumped in my seat when the bell rang. Putting the book on my desk I wait for Ms. West to start class.

"Hello everyone!" Ms. West cheerily starts class. "Hello Ms. West," everyone echoes. "Today we are starting a partner project." Whispers begin to erupt and Ms. West claps to quiet everyone. "Thank you. As I was saying we are starting a partner project and it will be an interesting one. We are doing a getting to know you project. Now this one will be a bit different. Once partners are determined they will get to know each other more personally than the usual getting to know you . Not just the surface, but I want you to get to know them like you would a character in a book. To the point you know some of  their deepest thoughts, and how they feel about certain things. Once you have done so you will write a poem. This introduces the class to the person and hopefully makes some new friendships as well. This grade is worth half your second quarter grade so you have three quarters of the semester to work on it."

I swear Ms. West looks at me as she mentions making friends. Wait... NO NO NO NO NO! Why is God suddenly deciding now is a great time to torture me. What have I done Lord? First James and now this. OH MY. NO. The only thing worse could be... No I am not even going to think about it.

"Okay so here are the partners," Ms. West begins listing off random people and I begin praying. Suddenly I hear my name, "and Kathryn and James". James turns and looks me in the eye, "So ready to get to know each other shadow queen?" Eff my life.
