they will remember our hesitance.

i wonder why
so many children
want to sleep
their childhood
away. there won't be
anymore young years
left for them to stay awake for.
to stay open-hearted and wild.
how can you see the world
drenched in the fog of drowsiness.
you'll miss when you could
run in the rain naked
and only worry about
whether that boy
you've pledged your heart to
will eat the stars you gave him or not.
instead of the pain that comes
from bearing the shoulders
of a mother. of a father.
of a withered heart.
a fearful soul.

there is much to say
about the language of a child.
the world is moving too fast for them
and they stumble to keep up.
we forget that we abandoned
our youth the moment
we tore our tendons
running to reach adulthood.
why can't we slow down the world
for the children who
deserve to stay children.
