I slumped down into the seat next to Hermione, it was our first Defence against the Dark Arts class. Taught by none other than Mad Eye Moody himself.
He scared the absolute shit out of me. In fact, I think he scared most students.
"Now, who can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?"
"Three, sir" Hermione quickly replied, I felt her tense up next to me as she talked about them.
I stared up nervously at Moody, "You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared!" He snapped. I sunk into my chair and me and Hermione shot each other a concerned look, we both hoped he better not do what we thought he was going to do. It was too early in the year for this...
He forced Ron to stand up, who stuttered about the Imperius curse, "Yes, yes... This has caused quite a bit of grief for some." Moody looked at all of our nervous faces and smirked, "Let me show you why."
I felt myself sink further into my seat, and as I looked around to see if anyone else shared my uncomfortableness I locked eyes with Draco Malfoy. Our eyes lingered on each others for a few seconds before he frowned at me. I quickly turned my head back to Moody, who held an enlarged spider in his hand.
"Imperio" He darted the spider amongst students' desks, insighting laughter from all corners of the room.
He then threw the spider onto Draco's face, I couldn't help but laugh. I covered my face and chuckled, like everyone else in the room. I even saw Harry clapping in amusement. "Get it off, get it off" he squealed. I had never seen him so scared. And of a silly little spider?
"Looks like Malfoy's got some fears we didn't know about" I whispered to Hermione who laughed in agreement. The energy was light in the room for once, you didn't often feel that in Dark Arts class.
That was, until Moody brutally threw the spider into the window. I could feel all the joy evaporate from my body as I came to realise what he was doing.
"What should I do? I could make her drown herself?" He sinisterly suggested. I felt myself tense up, clutching tight on to Hermione's arm. I could feel her fear too. We were all looking at Moody with disturbed faces. "Crucio" Moody started torturing it, provoking squeals and sounds of pain.
I couldn't.
I couldn't cope with this.
This was too much. This wasn't educational.
I felt all the air escape my body and I quickly stood up out of my chair, "Stop!" I practically sprinted up from my chair "Stop it! Please! Stop it!" I cried, "You're hurting it. Stop!" Moody looked at me and swallowed his breath, letting the spider go.
I instantly grabbed it from his desk, holding it gently in my hands. I could feel everyone's eyes burning into me. I didn't care. I wasn't embarrassed. I wasn't letting that spider be tortured for any longer. And no way was I going to put it back in the jar Moody brought it in.
I moved over to the window to let it outside. I let out a sigh of relief as I watched it scurry off into the bushes that rested against the building.
"Pathetic"I heard Malfoy murmur.
I snapped my head back at him, "If I wanted your opinion Malfoy, I would've asked. But I didn't. So shut up."
The challenging sounds of "Ooooo" murmured by his cronies. He scowled at me, "Bitch."
And that's what landed us both in detention. Cleaning the Dark Arts room at the end of the day. Cleaning under the desks, organising books, and cleaning the chalkboard. Everything, oh and without magic might I add. Obviously. And I couldn't imagine anyone worse for me to spend detention with.
Malfoy was sat, slumped on a desk with his arms crossed, while I started briskly organising the books into alphabetical order. I wanted to get this over with as quickly as I possibly could. Moments of silence passed by, but he still hadn't lifted a finger.
"Ok, when are you going to start actually helping me? I'm not the only one in detention here" He didn't even look at me when he answered "My father will hear about this. This is ridiculous. I shouldn't even be here with you. I have better things to do" He crossed his arms and looked around the room, avoiding my gaze. "Uh, hello? You called me a bitch" "Yes I did, and I also called you pathetic. Don't forget that detail too." He exclaimed proudly.
Crap. He was such a prick.
I sighed, "Whatever, Draco. I can't be bothered arguing with you" I tried to end the conversation, maybe if I just shut my mouth and tried to clean as fast as I could, I could possibly finish this all by myself. I doubted it, but I hoped. "I'm Malfoy to you. Not on a first name basis here Blackwater." he retorted.
I ignored him and kept cleaning, "Did you hear me?!" I snapped my head back to him, he was actually looking at me now. "I don't care, ok. Can you just shut up so I can finish this?" He scowled at me again. "That's pathetic what you did though. Saving that stupid spider. Of course, you'd be the only one to actually do that. It's sad." God. Why won't he just. Shut. up. I thought about changing my tactic, because clearly ignoring him hadn't worked. He had too big of a mouth. "Well I'm sorry that I'm not like you Malfoy, I feel empathy for other beings" I spat. I wasn't particularly in the mood for his Draco-ness. I had had a long day of classes after my - should I say traumatic - experience in Dark Arts class, and I was more grouchy than usual. He scoffed and stood up, and was walking over to the chalkboard. Oh, well that worked."If we both just shut up and clean, then we'll be done in no time and get to go and do better things" and that was the last thing I said to him for a while.
We both scurried around trying to finish as fast as we could. We both didn't want to be around each other more than we had to. I could hear his sighs, groans and murmurs to himself about how this was "bullshit". I felt better that we were nearly finished, and I actually felt bad for being such a dick to him before.
"The man's a psycho though right, I mean... which eye are we supposed to look at?" I joked, attempting to get a laugh out of him. It wasn't my best work. He glanced up at me and only slightly did I see a smirk creep up on his face, "He's a creep. Even more of a creep than Flitwick".
I was surprised. I didn't expect him to respond to me, but I was more amused that he found Flitwick creepy. "Flitwick? Creepy? How?" I laughed "I don't know, short people creep me out." We locked each others eyes and I chuckled. However he quickly flicked back to reality and his cold gaze froze over back onto his face. A few more moments of awkward silence passed by.
"I mean, I'm in Frog choir, and it does seem a bit odd singing down to him like that." I giggled, dusting off the last of the books. "Oh god, I forgot you're in that. That's bloody embarrassing!" he bursted into laughter.
"Wow, what great teamwork" I playfully teased as I got ready to leave, and he just sarcastically nodded and rolled his eyes, "Just don't get me in detention again. Or you'll regret it" He snarled, looking me in the eyes with a serious gaze. "Likewise", I smiled sweetly as he broke his gaze and walked out of the door.
I was definitely going to try my best to avoid being in detention with him again.
