- Graceland Too by Phoebe Bridgers -
We had only been taught by Hagrid in magical creatures class for a few weeks until he was indisposed due to that spiteful bitch Rita Skeeter. She had wrote a blatantly incorrect article about Hagrid being a half giant. Grubbly-Plank had taken his place for the time being, and I didn't mind her. She was sweet.
Our learning of the blast-ended skrewts was on hiatus. Instead, we were learning about Unicorns. I was relieved, those bloody skrewts were unpredictable. Unicorns were remarkable creatures, so remarkable that even the muggle world suspected their existence.
"See, this is what I want. Unicorns? Yes. Skrewts? No" Parvati sighed in relief as we were trudging through the snow into the forest.
"I don't think the boys will very much enjoy this lesson, they're not huge fans of males" Hermione giggled. She was right. I had read many books on Unicorns, they've fascinated me ever since I was given my wand, it was red oak wood with a unicorn hair core. They were such pure creatures, but with such cursed blood.
Suddenly, a group of boys aggressively shoved past us, "Out of the way" And of course, it was Draco, Crabbe and Goyle. I mean, who else would it be? I watched as they trudged off front of us.
"I'm surprised he's even still taking this class. With what happened last year" I stated. "No creature should have to deal with Malfoy's presence" "Not anyone should have to deal with his presence"
"Unicorns are very powerful creatures. Their blood, hair and horn all have potent magical properties. Some of you may possess unicorn hair as the core of your wand" Grubbly-Plank had led us down through the forest, where she was standing with a unicorn. A rope draped around its body in case it tried to run off. I had never actually seen a unicorn in person before, only pictures in books. They were more spectacular than I expected.
"They prefer a woman's touch. So boys, we will hold off on approaching her." She asserted. She looked around the class, and landed her eyes on me, "Miss Blackwater? Would you like to be the first to approach her?" I could hear sighs of disappointment from the rest of the girls in the class.
"I've heard you have a way with magical creatures, Hagrid speaks very highly of you" she smiled at me as I slowly approached the unicorn. I could just feel everyone rolling their eyes behind me. Thankfully, she was calm. I already knew how to approach her, I had read about it many times. "Come on, easy does it..." Grubbly-Plank insisted. I slowly extended my hand out, and rested my hand on her. "I've read all about you" I whispered with a smile at her, her deep blue eyes glistening down at me.
"Very well done, Miss Blackwater. She likes you. Ok, who's next?" as I walked back from the unicorn, I caught Draco's eye. His face was calm with a slight sense of intrigue in his eyes. I just smiled at him. I felt happy.
"Viktor Krum asked you?!" I exclaimed in a whisper, me and Hermione were sitting on a bench in the courtyard. "Shhhh, it's a secret right now." she whispered. "He's astounding. I'm so jealous" I joke, flipping the pages of my Divination book, pretending to read. "I still think Blue will ask you. Apparently he hasn't asked anyone else yet, so..." "I would go with anyone at this point, maybe I should just ask Dean?" "No!" Hermione blurted, she looked around to see if anyone was listening in. "Just wait. He will ask you. And if he doesn't, somebody else will"
And she was right.
It was later that evening after dinner, and I was walking back to the common rooms. I had left before everyone else, I felt awkward with everyone talking about the ball and who was going with who, I just needed to get away.
"Bella! Wait!" I turned around to see Blue running towards me, he slowed down when he reached me. "I need to talk to you"
"Yes?" I answered, looking at him with an exhausted look on my face. It had been the first time he talked to me in a week and a half. "You remembered I exist?" I retorted. He smirked, rolling his eyes.
"You're coming to the ball with me, okay?"
I felt myself turn bright red. He had finally asked me. Well, technically he told me. But it was all the same! I tried to hide my excitement from my face, but I was unsuccessful.
"Yes, I'd love to," I grinned. He walked closer to me and held my hands in his. "Look, I'm sorry I haven't talked to you in a while. I was just... nervous. I didn't want to be rejected. I like you." His green eyes looked into mine. So, he did like me. I mean, I was happy. I thought. But I couldn't deny the uneasy feeling in my stomach, I wasn't sure why.
"I'm glad you asked me," I smiled. There was an awkward moment of silence, I hadn't told him I liked him back and I could tell that's what he was waiting for. But I wasn't really that sure if I did. Recently, I thought I did. But that feeling in my stomach told me differently.
"Okay. I better go back, they'll wonder where I got off to" He smiled, dropping my hands. I stood there watching as he walked away.
