The best I can do

I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting but the start of the training seemed simple enough. In the shooting range, witch was exactly what it sounds like, I was handed weapons of all kinds and given pointers on how to use them.

It was not my first time handling firearms but you wouldn't be able to tell based on the exacerbated sighs and repeated adjustments to my stance and posture. I didn't miss the targets at least, but with unmoving targets, that don't shoot back, that meant very little.

According to what I could tell my strength was with rifles and assault weapons. I was less then accurate with handguns, shotguns had more kick then I could handle after a few shots and I didn't have the strength to hold a steady stream of fire on target with a Machine gun.

That's not to say I was a born sniper. My clusters were wide and dispersed over the target. As for the assault rifles, I was told that they were typically the easiest to handle anyway and that my success with them meant nothing special. All in all I was what was expected of by an average untrained civilian with limited experience with firearms.

Next came some basic physical training. Jogging, Weight training, and an obstacle course. Again nothing special. I had solid endurance but not much in the way of strength, or agility. I decided that actual combat training could wait until I'd polished up these other skills. That's not to say I didn't do any combat training. But it was all basic. Fighting stances and basic forms.

It was slow going and I had to face the reality that I wasn't a natural born soldier, I was however told by a few of the human soldiers here on base that I had the heart for it and that was all that matters. Apparently a guy who could do 50 push-ups but quit was less desirable then a guy who could only do 23 but pushed with all they had to do 24.

It was also my first time meeting the more human aspects of the Girls Frontline world. There was soldiers, mechanics, medical officers, everything you'd expect of an actual military base. It was, to my embarrassment, some of these human personal who stepped in when the t-dolls training started to get out of hand. Not that they were much better but they didn't take turns shooting at you with rubber bullets till unconscious so they could give you a lap pillow, all under the guise of live fire exercises of course.

I got three square meals and had plenty of work to do so time passed quickly. Almost two weeks went by. Every once in a wile I'd check the chat room to see if anything important was happening but for the most part it was idle chatter, until.

-Mydude420- So hey. Has anyone gotten any Messages from Griffin command? I mean like anything? Cause I got nothing. This is a military outfit right? Well where's our orders? Missions? Anything?

The question itself was lost in the constant Babel of the chat room but it was there long enough for me to read, and wonder. It has been a wile since any of the Echelons did a real mission. Gard duty was the closest thing we had these days and although we have rebuffed a few attacks there was almost nothing coming in through official channels. There was still a war going on right? We were here to help fight it? So why the silence?

On my computer I brought up a log of received orders. Looking over it, there seemed to be a constant flow of orders up until our execution and rebirth as other worlders.  Then nothing. I found the appropriate channel and sent a short, and hopefully formal, message to what I hoped was command.

Then I found the map. It was sitting there on the computer, and it was built just like in the game. I could get live footage of almost anywhere in the base from this computer. The garage was empty, and come to think of it I haven't seen the heavy units at all yet, the fairy room had a few t-dolls and fairies fluttering around. The Exploration room was dark, it's mechanical arms lay limp and the only sign of movement was a red blinking light of the organization console.

I still had so much to learn. I wasn't using my resources to there full potential at all! From the game I knew that if not being used heavy units should ALWAYS be training something. Levels, or skills, speaking of skills I was positive that of the ten echelons I had not all the T-dolls were maxed on skills, and I'd not made any new equipment sense getting here either! It's no wonder command hasn't given any marching orders am I even ready for that? In a panic I was about to pull up another message form when I got a ding on my notifications.

It was a message that read simply:
Standby, See assistant for training missions.

That was it. They were telling me to practice doing my new job. I mean it was important that I learn how to command properly right? Still. There was so much to learn and do and apparently none of us were being given direction. I buzzed Kalina.

[yes sir?] she asked.

"Hey do we have a list of training exercises from command that I'm supposed to be going though right now?" I asked trying to keep the irritation out of my voice.

[Uhmmm yes?] she said slowly.

"I see. In the future please do not withhold orders from command no matter how trivial." I said again as calmly as I could manage.

[Yes sir. In that case shall I meet you in the operation room for deployment on training exercises?] Kalina asked.

"Yes. We need to get started right away." I said. The comm went silent. I presumed that meant Kalina was off to set up the simulations for me.

It was simple, very much so. In fact it was move for move exactly like the game except the enemy units don't wait for me to take my turn. Regardless of my learning curve Echelon-8 was able to complete the training mission without issue, being far stronger then the training dummies on hand.

The next few training missions however were taxing. They went something like this. I would deploy Echelon-7, 8, and 9 as quickly as I could and have them get to work capturing the surrounding nodes. However even as I was keeping a careful eye on the training dummy's with everything moving in real time instead of turn base movement I had issues keeping up and more then once I failed. As I kept trying and failing to play a game of chess were the enemy pieces is moved on their own and out of turn I quickly became disheartened in my ability to lead.

At the end of a long week I was barely any better with only being able to force the simulation into a stalemate. That was when I got a new message from command.
