''The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patients in care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease'' – Thomas Edison

Draco had dropped Hermione to the heads common room after she had recovered from her breakdown, it had taken them an hour to convince Madam Pince that she was alright and was in fact not lying about her well being.  The walk through the halls was awkward and embarrassing, Hermione refused to meet his eyes all the while trying to disappear within the folds of her red over-sized sweater.

The color really complimented her tan skin and brown hair, it looked particularly bewitching when paired with the dark hue of red that blossomed on her cheeks. Draco was tempted to tell her that but held his tongue for fear of crossing his limits. If this worked out like he hoped than he would have all the time in the world to tell her how beautiful she was, and she consented to hold her gently.

Lost in the sight of his mate beside him Draco did not realize that they had arrived at their destination, Hermione had turned to face and was staring intently at his face.

"I need some time to sort out y thoughts," she gave him an awkward smile fidgeting with the collar of her sweater "may be I'll be able to do some research."

Draco nodded understanding her need to learn about what she was putting herself for, "I have some books from the manor that can help. If you you'd like to have a look at them, I can bring them to you."

"Yes, thank you" they remained like that for a few minutes, her staring at her shoes and him at her. The weight of their tangled fates heavy upon their shoulders, seeping under the skin like an ache into old wounds.

"You should get in. It must have been a tiring day."

She nodded and Draco mumbled a small 'see you later' before he turned and walked in the direction of his own.

Really? See you later?

His veela cursed at him for his lack of eloquence when talking to her but she was someone he had tormented all his academic life. Merlin was having a good laugh at his expense to pair with the one woman that he had been a curse to all this time. If he was struggling to talk to her than Hermione must be so frightened to spend her life with her bully. He was the one that had insulted her existence and than he was the one telling her that the reason she existed was to be with him.

It was too unfair on her.

Draco was getting used to the voice of his veela inside his head, once he was mated the part of him that was veela would merge with the part of him that was human. But before that Draco would have to go through phases where the veela would take complete control and that was what had him worried. Letting his veela prowl through the school uncontrolled and unmated meant he could harm Hermione or everyone else he came across.

The other problem was breaking up with Astoria Greengrass. While he had never publicly dated Astoria, he had promised to marry her, the relationship between them was build on his need to rebel against pureblood ideologies. Astoria was a gentle soul, she would surely understand his reasons but Draco was too scared to loss the friendship they had built over the holidays.

So, he needed to tell her as the first order business even before he progressed anywhere with Hermione. It was at least he could offer her in exchange for all he was making her go through.

Draco walked around the last hallway before he arrived at the Slytherin dungeons, the common room grew silent as he stepped in, all eyes his turning his way then going back to their conversations. Draco sighted Blaise spread across one of the many couches in the back, one of legs thrown over the back rest and the other on the arm, His own arms were covering his face. Theodore was next to him on the chair  with a book open on his lap, seemingly lost in the words. Draco plopped down on the couch causing Blaise to move his feet and turn over into a ball.

"Where were you?" He smacked Draco's back hard.

"With Hermione."

"Since when did you call her by her given name?" Blaise tapped Theo's shoulder causing the boy to look up from his book with a bewildered expression etched upon his face.

"When did you get here?!" Nott looked less surprised than he sounded.

"When you were traveling between worlds through that book," Draco rolled his eyes.

Theodore got up from his chair and smacked Draco on the shoulder with the thick book in his hands. This caused quite a few of their housemates to turn and stare at them for an uncomfortably long time. In revenge of being hit Draco softly pushed his friend away form him and into Blaise's lap. Theodore struggled off his lap as soon he sat down and crumbled on to the floor.

"What is wrong with you?!"

"His head is messed up right now," Blaise supported his argument "he called Granger, Hermione."

Draco groaned, "is it that odd?"

"No," Theo shook his head "it's not odd but rather how to put it, unexpected. Did you tell her?"

Draco could see the truth in his words but he decided against actually accepting that in front of the slytherin common room. While, he did plan on becoming kinder towards the people he met everyday in his life, he had no interest on making similar formalities towards complete strangers, neither did he plan on becoming a different person.

"I did." he nodded "Made her breakdown in the middle of the library"

"Which way from here?" one of his friends asked, although he didn't pay attention to it actually was.

Which way indeed.

Hiya!!

This chapter was in my drafts for weeks before I decided to let it live. Here it is now

I have questions:   What changes would you like to see in Draco? Do you think the golden trio can accept Hermione and Draco?

Should I keep the quotes in the beginning of the chapter or not? 🤔

Stay safe, Happy reading!
