It had been a long, awful day at work, and you felt hopeless while walking home. The street lamps cast a dull glow on the wet pavement in front of you, and you shivered from the cold. The wind blew the misty air at you sideways, and you felt your clothes beginning to dampen. You pulled you jacket in around you tighter.
You had a few more blocks to go before reaching the apartment, and you hated walking alone this late. Nothing had happened before, but this wasn't the safest of cities. Your anxiety climbed with the sound of each footstep. You caught a glimpse of a shadow lurking in one of the alleyways as you passed, and quickened your pace.
Suddenly, you could hear footsteps behind you, and the conversation of a few men. They were drunk and laughing, and one called out to you.
"Hey, where ya going honey? Come have fun with us!"
You tried to ignore them, and started speed walking. But the men behind you didn't stop. Their footsteps were approaching fast, and their taunts were getting mean.
"If you don't want to have fun with us, we might just have to make you!"
You looked behind you with wide eyes, and ran. They started running, too, trying to reach out and grab at your coat. Your apartment was just a little bit farther, but could you outrun them? You needed to call the police, or a hero, or anyone...
Your heart felt like it was about to beat out of your chest. You could barely think through the panic. Suddenly, your foot slipped on the wet concrete, and you began to fall. You could hear the strangers laughing, and you felt the pavement rip through the skin on your hands and knees. The men strode up to you and stood above you, the glowing street lamps leaving their faces in shadow.
"Looks like the party can start now..." the larger one said.
You tried to get up, but the other one grabbed your arm and yanked you to your feet, hard.
"Stop, please!" you screamed. "Please somebody help me!"
Just then, a brilliant flame erupted from up ahead. "I suggest you let the young lady go," said a voice from behind it.
"Woah, man we were just playing around. Whatever, though, she wasn't worth it anyway." He dropped your arm and you feel to you knees.
"Stupid bitch," the other said, spitting on the ground near you. You felt your whole body shaking and you could barely catch your breath. It was only now that you realized your face was wet with tears.
The figure in the distance approached and crouched down beside you. "Are you alright, miss?" he asked, offering you a hand. You looked up at him, to see a pair of beautiful eyes, each one a different color. "It's alright they're gone. I'm a pro hero, I can take you home now, and I'll make sure the authorities catch up with those two. My name is Shoto Todoroki."
You tried to slow your breathing down, and gasped a "thank you" as tears rushed down your cheeks. You got your breathing back under control and explained where you lived.
"Alright let's head that way then," he said. You grabbed his hand and let him pull you up from the pavement. "Those scrapes are pretty nasty. I can perform some first aid once we're inside." he said. You nodded, and clung to the hero's arm. You were too afraid to let go, and something about him calmed you. He was safe.
As you were walking up the steps to your apartment, you only let go to open the door. He led you to the couch and took out some first aid supplies stored in his belt. He asked to see your hands, and began cleaning them gently. You sat staring straight ahead, quietly crying.
"What's your name?" he asked, shaking you out of your catatonia.
"It's uh, i - it's Y/N" you said quietly.
"Mind if I ask what you were doing out alone so late?" he asked while moving onto your other hand.
"Uhm..." you started, but before you could finish, tears came flooding down and sobs broke through your lips. You turned toward Todoroki and buried your face in his chest. He was surprised at first, but softened and wrapped his arms around you.
"It's alright, Y/N. They can't get you know. I'm here." he said in a whisper. You stayed that way for awhile, until you remembered that you had no business crying on a pro hero in your living room.
You sniffled and sat up, embarrassed by the tear stains you'd left on his costume. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to -" you said, wiping your eyes.
He was giving you a soft, barely there smile, and it made you blush. You had just met, but something about Todoroki made you feel all warm inside.
"Do you have anyone that can come stay with you?" he asked, "You shouldn't be alone tonight."
"Well, no, not really..." you started, "I just moved here, and I don't have any friends really."
"I see," he said. He noticed your brows crease and your eyes fill with worry at the thought of being alone. "I can stay with you, then. If that's alright?"
You looked at him surprised, "I really shouldn't take up that much of your time, I mean you're a pro hero!" you started. "This is below you, I mean - "
He could see you getting flustered, so he took your hand and held it in his. "We'll just say I'm not on duty, but I'll be here as a friend. Is that okay? I'll be your first friend here."
"Oh, o - okay," you said. A smile crept onto your lips.
"It's settled then. Do you want to get out of your wet clothes? I can find us a movie and maybe a snack?"
You nodded and stood up. This was unbelievable! After changing into an oversized t shirt and shorts and cleaning yourself up a bit, you came back into the living room to find Todoroki waiting for you with some freshly popped popcorn and a movie pulled up. "Is this alright?" he asked.
You smiled and nodded. You grabbed a thin blanket from across the room, and sat down next to him. Around 20 minutes into the movie, he noticed you shivering. All the cold rain had chilled you to the bone.
"Are you cold?" he asked. You tried to play it off like you were fine, but he didn't buy it. "You're not catching a cold on my watch. Come sit closer. My left side can warm you up."
You inched closer toward him and instantly felt better. The heat radiating from him was lovely, and you suddenly felt yourself snuggling up beside him. He put his arm around you and held you there. You felt like a small child. Safe, warm, and loved. You stayed that way, and before long, you drifted off to sleep in his embrace.
