At those words, Douglas froze. He had wanted to leave all his life. That was all their dream. But now that it was finally coming true, well, he wasn't sure if he was ready. Douglas stormed out of the office, and Patrick followed close at his heels.
Patrick put a hand on Douglas' shoulder. "Douglas, hold on! I know it's a lot to take in, but I'm not making this up! You have to trust me! I know it's going to be hard, but it's everything we lived for Douglas!"
Douglas stopped. "Yeah, I know, but I-I-I just need a second, okay?" And with that, he stormed off.
Later that day.....
Douglas was looking out over the ravine, thinking. He was thinking about all sorts of things, the home he vaguely remembered now, and same for the parents who almost seemed to him, like long lost cousins of some kind that he was to never see again. Because whoever had put them here had dictated that. But escaping might change something. Maybe his parents would be there. Even if the people who took their parents away from them were the ones who wanted him to escape. He wanted to leave, desperately, but his home, where he stood now, it truly was home to him. And he was afraid that to leave his home here, that he might lose the last thing he had left. Yet something in him said to go. So Douglas stood up and headed to Patrick's hut.
