Today was the day. Patrick said that they had to leave at night, when no one was watching. But everyone knew. The time was now.
Douglas hurried to find Patrick, Theo, and Benjamin at the top of the shortest cliff. Which means nothing because all of them are at least 100 feet down, and 100 feet up. Plus, all the caves, jagged rocks, and the river that people said lied beneath it all.
It was dark, but not too dark. Patrick leaned over and spoke to us. "Let's go. Tonight is the night that we have been waiting for. And it's finally time." He started to walk down a path that went down about 10 feet. And then it stopped. But packed with them were ropes, water, and other neccesities for what they would be doing. Douglas was waiting for someone to speak, to make this more normal. Finally Theo spoke. "Hey, Patrick, what is it with you and John? Why are you guys always so mad at eachother?"
Benjamin and Patrick exchanged a few whispers and nervous glances at them, and then went quiet. Theo banged his fist on Patrick's back. "Ow!" Patrick yelled.
"Well, tell me!" yelled Theo. Patrick sighed and said, "We don't like eachother. Think of it as an old married couple, always arguing. Does that suit you?"
Theo laughed. "You were married? Gross."
Out of the corner of his eye, Douglas thought he saw Patrick blush. "No, no Theo. We were never married. And thank god for it too." Now Douglas sweared he saw a tear replace the blush. What was up with Patrick? He should ask him about tonight, in private, thought Douglas. And so they just kept walking, in silence.
