Stare. That's all I managed to do as Simon Denvers walked towards us, his hands in the pockets of his black jeans worn under a red flannel shirt. Pam and I stood up to greet him, Pam pushing me forward 'encouragingly'.
"Hey Willow, hey Pam." He said with a heartfelt smile. His ocean blue eyes, on his face framed with jet black hair, were glowing with recognition of his friends. Simon was in our group of homeschoolers that met during examinations. We became friends, and eventually began hanging out. But that wasn't very frequent, as I couldn't handle all that stress. You see, I get really nervous and chattery around a crush. So it's best if I stay away from him as much as I can or I'll risk embarrassment.
"Hi Simon." I replied shyly.
Pam must be facepalming in her mind. (mind-palming? — anyways) "Hey Simon, how's things?"
"Good. I'm here to get some research done. What about you guys?"
Pam 'discreetly' nudged me. "Oh, we're good too. We came by to do some reading again, but didn't expect to see you." I knew that was a lie.
"But why don't we join you?" Pam asked.
"Sure." He said.
We all went and sat down at a table beside the research section, which was a few aisles down from the mystery one. I sat across from Simon, and Pam sat beside me. We read our respective books for about fifteen minutes, until Pam decided to start some conversation.
"So, what exactly are you researching on?" She asked.
"Oh, nothing very interesting, just whales." He replied.
"And you mean to say whales aren't interesting?!" She rebuked incredulously.
"Well, yes, whales are interesting. Fascinating actually." He said with a glimmer in his eyes.
"Woah, s-so do you check out their behaviour patterns, or..?" I tried to converse. Pam was smiling at me with pride.
"Well nothing in particular yet, just touching the surface for a project. But if I were to actually dig in.. I'm saving it for the summer." He said, sighing.
"Nice." I replied simply pathetically, but what can I even do? He has that effect on me.
We continued reading for another hour, until Simon had to leave for his guitar class. Yes, he played the guitar. Could he be more perfect??
Then Pam and I stayed for another fifteen minutes, so as to not seem like stalkers to him and to respect the library's wonders. We then left to go home by around 6 p.m. We were walking along the sidewalk at the edge of the building, when Pam began to gush.
"Oh my goodness! I can't believe you just did that! That's the most number of words you've ever spoken directly to him!" She said with a grin.
I went red. "Well, I try." I argued, but smiled sheepishly. I couldn't believe it myself, to be honest.
We walked for another ten minutes before reaching our neighbourhood. We headed back to our homes after bidding goodbye at Pam's doorstep with a hug. I made my way back home, just as the setting sun had begun to cast a violet hue over the evening sky.
