Trigger Warnings: None
(A/N: Sorry for the wait on this one! Thank you for 1,000 reads! This is unedited and I don't really like the ending but I wanted to get a chapter out. Chapters will be infrequent until I get more time on my hands. But I don't plan on abandoning this book.)
"Enough! Kat, stop pestering Cathy while she's trying to help. Especially because she's by boiling water and a flame. Anna, go help Lina set the table. And Anne," the irritating blonde finally managed to grab the hand of the woman who had been skating around the kitchen this entire time, "I swear to god if you don't stop skating around in the kitchen while we're cooking, I will take away your Heelys...You know what, I'm just going to go lay down. I'll eat later; don't wait up for me."
Without another word, Jane left the kitchen which had been stunned from its frenzy into silence. The only noise came from Cathy's occasional stirring of the barely boiling water Catherine let her watch over. They were all just glad to see her out of her room and interacting with all of them. She hadn't really minded the younger queen trying to help her; she saw Kat as her sister, no matter what headspace she was in.
Anne had skidded to a soft stop thanks to Anna interlocking their hands. She used the red queen for support as she took off the wheeled-shoes. When she eventually looked up into her friends caring eyes, a single tear ran down her cheek.
"No!" Anna cried out as she immediately brushed the tear away gently. "Don't cry, Annie."
"She's gonna hate me..." She sniffed.
"She doesn't hate you, Annie-"
Anne interrupted miserably. "She will now."
"She's just tired." Kat said from where she was sitting on the counter near the stove.
Cathy mumbled in agreement as she came over once Catherine put in the pasta they had intended to eat for dinner. "And grumpy."
"Kat is right," the oldest queen quietly said, aware that the woman they were talking about was only a room over. "Janey just had a busy day today. I don't think she's very upset or anything. Not at you all, at least. We'll see how she's doing later. Let's just let her rest. For now, I have a very important mission that I need you guys to do."
"A secret one?" Anne asked, wide-eyed while letting herself forget about the events from a few mintues ago (at least for now).
Catherine momentarily stopped stirring the noodles and crouched down, motioning for them to come closer. "Very secret." Kat took that as her cue to leave. She was jumping down from the counter to go to her room when Catherine stopped her. "We need you too, Kat, but it is up to you. It's whatever you'd like to do."
She waited to recieve some kind of decision, which happened to be a nod and moving towards the group, before continuing. "I need you to rescue your toys and stuffed animals before the Evil Jane Monster can steal them. So, Annie and Anna have to grab all of them. Then Cathy and Kat have to help them escape to the room upstairs; that way they'll be safe for the night. And if you can do that without waking up the Jane Monster, I have a special reward."
"A reward?"
Catherine only shrugged, but a smile broke through her attempt at an emotionless facade. "Only if the toys are safe and Jane doesn't wake up."
The three fully regressed queens immediately sprung into action. Catherine's promise of a reward, along with her storytelling and purposely over exaggerated hand movements, were enough to lighten the mood. Kat, however, stayed back for a moment and looked at the other woman. She was grinning.
"Did you just call Jane a monster in front of Anne, Anna, and Cathy?" Kat laughed. "They are never going to let that go, you know."
Catherine nodded. She opened her mouth to say something. However, before she could a whisper shout from the living room was clearly heard, "Cathy! No!"
