Waking up in an unfamiliar place is always jarring. What makes it worse is when the unfamiliar place is a cold dark room with metal walls and security cameras in every corner.
Struggling to sit up, I looked around as I tried to remember why I was in this room. Remembering the evil looking man in the SWAT uniform, I started to panic. It finally happened- the government found me.
"Good morning!" A low voice said over a loudspeaker. I buried my head in my knees, not responding to the voice. Suddenly the voice chuckled.
"Christina Dovev. After sixteen years of evading us, we finally won," The man said smugly. Suddenly his face appeared on a small screen in the wall. He looked strong and angry, like your typical military leader. Part of me was terrified.
But a bigger part of me was angry. All I ever wanted to do was live my life and this man was the reason I was never able to do it. I stood up and met the screen with my eyes.
"Congratulations. What now?" I spat. The man's smirk turned into a full evil smile.
"You don't get the privilege of knowing anything." He snapped, and the screen turned black.
"Hey!" I screamed, knocking on the screen angrily. There was no reply. I was alone.
The fear inside me slowly started to overtake the anger, and a sob escaped my lips.
Sixteen years of running, and in just a few weeks without my mom I managed to get caught.
I'm such an idiot.
I sat against the cold metal wall and tried to wipe my tears away, but the more I wiped them away the faster they came.
Not only was I caught and probably about to be killed or experimented on for the rest of my life, but the only person that would care might also be dead.
An image of Cameron lying dead where I had left him flashed in my mind. They could've killed him the moment they found him, not even giving him a chance to act innocent.
Or they left him alone, and he was back to living a normal life. Maybe he found a new conspiracy theory to obsess over.
I chose to believe the second one, because how would I ever know the truth anyway?
After hours of sitting in silence, the door to my cell opened. Behind it was the soldier-man from the screen and a woman in a suit. The man's uniform had a tag that said "General Dyer."
Dyer stepped into the cell and motioned for the woman to follow him.
"Christina, this is Doctor Reid. She will be conducting all experiments on you," he stated smugly as the woman studied me. She stepped in front of Dyer and walked around me, taking a closer look.
"Interesting," her calm voice started, "she looks like any other teenager."
"I've seen her in action, trust me, she's not like any other teenager," Dyer laughed. He then turned his attention back to me with a glare.
"Show her," he demanded. I shook my head.
"I can't control it," I snapped. Dyer took a threatening step towards me, towering above me.
"You better learn to, because if not I'll have your boyfriend killed right in front of you."
My heart stopped, and I wondered if he was referring to Cameron.
They captured him too?
My heart started racing again and I made no attempt to slow it down. An audible gasp from Doctor Reid confirmed that I had turned invisible.
"Amazing!" She breathed. She reached out and grabbed my sleeve, touching my invisible hand. I ignored her touch, glaring at Dyer.
"I don't have a boyfriend," I responded to him, hoping he was bluffing. I needed to know if he had captured Cameron.
"Maybe not anymore, but we found him wandering in the woods and he had obviously been with you. He'll be delighted to find out we finally found you too."
I watched Dyer's eyes, searching for something to tell me that he was lying. But all I saw was amusement.
"I've been alone for weeks, I don't know who you're talking about," I lied.
"Interesting, so the boy I've seen you with on several security livestreams was not even there? In the store where you met your dad? In the hotel in New Orleans?" He asked, even though he obviously already knew the answer.
Liam.
I knew I had turned invisible again when I felt my heart drop, and the sound of Dr. Reid furiously taking notes was a good tell too.
"That's what I thought. I've been tracking you since the day your mother turned you in. I wanted to see what you would do on your own. But obviously it was boring so I decided to find out what you're capable of here. You'll be spending a lot of time with Dr. Reid, so get comfortable," He smirked. I felt the anger bubble up inside of me as he left the room, leaving Dr. Reid to stare at me incredulously.
"Sit down! I have so many questions!" She said excitedly. Her bubbly personality did not seem to match this place. I found myself wondering how she even started working here.
"I don't really have answers, you're wasting your time," I snapped. She smiled.
"Not about your powers, about you! Your story! We'll figure out your powers starting tomorrow," she said, flipping through the papers on her clipboard.
"Do you realize I'm still a person? I'm not a lab rat," I huffed. I refused to tell this woman or anyone else here anything.
Dr. Reid sighed, but gave me a sympathetic smile. She stood up and walked towards the door to leave, but turned around one last time.
"I know this is not ideal, but the more you cooperate the easier your time here will be. The others learned that quickly, I hope you will too," She said. She paled suddenly, then rushed out of the room.
But I didn't miss what she said.
The others?
