I ran into my bedroom, the only safe place from the fire that had already consumed my entire family. I threw open the window and slammed the door, crying.
"Help!" I screamed.
Ena-- at the time she was fourteen and I thirteen-- was the only one who heard me.
She ran through the fire and grabbed me, racing to safety.
Only after that did she alert the firefighters…
It was that day I swore I would follow her. It was also that day her long blonde hair turned black from an all-too-close encounter with the fire. She even has a long scar that reaches from her eyebrow to chin.
