After Mr. McCormick finished the 'Dad talk', he left John B to think about the slightly overwhelming conversation as her unpacked the few belongings he had. His mind kept coming back to that one line: "Y'all are just the cutest." What was that supposed to mean? Does her father think they're a thing? Does Affinity think they're a thing? Does he think they're a thing?
Suddenly, the whole process of overthinking began to take over. All this time, he thought they were strictly friends, but now he felt the need to question it all. He had to admit, he admired her, but he didn't think it was in that way. She was his friend now. She was a Pogue and he knew the rule.
No Pogue-on-Pogue macking.
But did she know that? Maybe he should just talk to her? Her dad had to be wrong.
Or not.
Or maybe...
"John B!"
John B jumped up from where he sat on the bed and stared straight ahead, immediately finding Affinity's gentle green eyes. She leaned up against the door frame with furrowed brows as a smile graced her lips. John B couldn't hide the smile across his face, but what he couldn't figure out was why there was suddenly a pit in his stomach.
"Damn, was it that bad?" She questioned.
It took John B a second to process the question. "What? Oh, it was fine."
Affinity raised a brow at him. "Okay...so why does it look like you've seen a ghost?"
"I-I don't." John B was mentally smacking himself in the face. He couldn't have been more obvious that he wasn't telling the full story.
Affinity scoffed and took a seat in the bean bag chair that was adjacent to her bed. She leaned her elbow into the cushion and propped her head on her hand. "You really are a terrible liar. C'mon, spill it, dude."
Dude. That was a promising 'friend' word.
"Well- uh...he threatened me slightly-"
"That's nothing out of the normal so just keep talking," Affinity interrupted.
"Okay, wow- you're good." John B took in a deep breath as he tried to pick out the best words. "He said we were...'the cutest'."
"The what?"
"My thoughts exactly."
"Wh-" Affinity didn't even have the words, and suddenly, her overthinking took the wheel. "Why-Why would he say that."
John B shrugged his shoulders.
"That's not helpful."
"I don't know what to say!"
"Okay, but were not-"
"Yeah-"
"Together...?"
