The Outer Banks of North Carolina aren't that big but leave enough room for each side to have their own place. Each side? The Pogues and Kooks, different sides of the island for different sides of life— the big houses and extravagant boats belong to the Kooks, whereas the Pogues... they get the leftovers.

Pogues and Kooks don't mix, but Kiara Carrera is an exception— an anomaly. Foot in both worlds, a rich kid who hangs out with the not so rich kids and use to be best friends with the Kook Princess herself, Sarah Cameron.

Not-so self-proclaimed Kook Princess of the Outer Banks. Loaded rich, everything she wants— except a steady relationship. Kiara and Sarah use to be best friends until the end of ninth grade when Gianna Brooke Routledge came around and swooped Sarah right from under Kiara's nose.

Gianna Brook Routledge, a wannabe Kook actually; hung out with the Pogues until ninth grade when her family bought a manor in the middle of Kook territory. Kooks and Pogues don't mix and Gianna was lost to the sharks. Made a new best friend and dumped her old one, JJ Maybank.

That boy is a mystery in himself. Never moved from the island, local as they come. A little eccentric, but means well. JJ used to be best friends with Gianna, since the third grade, until Sarah came into the picture. Now, he spends his time only with Kiara, and Pope Heyward.

The last, and smartest, Pogue is Pope Heyward. Much for brains, not much brawns. Pope levels out the Pogues and helps them get out of tough situations as he is the brains of the operation. Though smart, he doesn't mind getting into a little mischief himself with his two best friends.

"Kie, Pope, come on!"

"JJ, no! Are you insane?" Kiara scolded. "We're not doing that."

"Don't be such a pussy, Kie," he smirked.

JJ had been friends with Kiara for a very long time and learned how to manipulate her to do things he wanted— taunting her was one of them.

"Oh, shut up," mumbled Kiara.

Pope stood in the sidelines, smirking to himself, knowing very well he wanted to surf the surge. Kiara begrudgingly picked up her surfboard and marched to the shore with JJ and Pope following her, high-fiving one another.

The waves were wild and dangerous, the red flag was up signalling the closure of the beach, but they didn't care. Hurricane Agatha was coming in strong and without a care. The three Pogues didn't care much for rules and wanted to do something exhilarating to set off the beginning of summer.

On the other side of the island, Sarah and Gianna were fighting over surfing the surge and their summer plans.

"No, Sarah, I don't want to!"

"Gi, you have all summer to read your stupid fiction books," Sarah whined. "It's the beginning of the summer and you're already boring."

"Take that back," Gianna narrowed her eyes at her best friend.

"You love to surf, I don't get it!"

"Not during a hurricane, Sarah Cameron."

Sarah raised her brow at Gianna, not liking the use of her full name.

"Gianna," Sarah warned.

"You only want to recklessly surf the surge because Topper broke up with you." Gianna immediately regretting saying it as Sarah's face contorted with fury and sadness. It wasn't like Sarah to get hung up over a boy, especially a douche like her ex-boyfriend, but it did hurt her, even if she never told anyone.
