I woke in my warm bed with a smile. It was a beautiful Friday and the birds started their morning song. The smell of bacon woke my senses and my stomach growled with anticipation. My mom doesn’t usually make bacon in the morning. Usually no one does, I’m by myself most of the time…..
Shit!
Someone was in the house and…..making bacon? I guess they thought it would be a good thing to eat before they cut me into pieces and feed me to the next door neighbor’s dog. Calm down Mal maybe it’s not that bad. They will get it over quick and easy or maybe you are just smelling things. I sniffed my arm pit and coughed.
Damn I need a shower.
So I wasn’t smelling things, so there is a person down stairs. My breathing fastened and my hands started to sweat. This wasn’t on the test! I don’t know how to handle these things.
So you know when you’re watching a horror movie and you scream at the dumb girl going towards the noise? Well that was me right now, except I was following an amazing smell. I picked up my ballet trophy, from when I was five, and slowly followed the smell.
Making my way slowly down the stairs, leaning against the wall as if I was in a spy movie. All I need was a really hot guy.
Stop thinking about boys!
I stilled as a sound faintly filled the kitchen. It sounded like someone humming and going through the fridge. They are Grinching my house! You know when Grinch stole all that food, that’s what they were doing! Not when I can stop them. Counting to three I jumped into the kitchen and pointed my six inch trophy at the intruder. Not before I let out my ear piercing battle scream.
The intruder screamed back at me and dropped a carton of eggs. I held my trophy proudly before realizing who it was a lowered it.
“Aunt Mel?”
She put her hand to her heart and took deep breaths, trying to regain its steady beat. She was dressed in her usual attire that her husband so generously paid for. She looked flawless as ever.
“Mallory you scared the death out of me. What are you doing?” She looked at me with worried eyes and I put the trophy on the counter so I didn’t scare her anymore.
I sat on the stool to the island in the middle of the kitchen. “I didn’t know you were coming. I thought you were a murder.” Yawning and rubbing my eyes the sleepiness came back to me. Aunt Mel put a warm cup of coffee in front of me. I gratefully smiled at her and took big gulps as I listened to her.
“I came to check up on my favorite niece.” She smiled at me and played with lose ends of my hair. I rolled my eyes and chuckled at her.
‘’I’m your only niece.” She smiled back at me and kissed my forehead.
“Yes you are but you will always be my favorite.”
My aunt Mel was the younger sister to my mom. She was 31 and was seven years younger than my mom. Her blonde hair was the color of honey and made bees jealous. She was taller than mom and was a skinner. Not that I judge her on her looks. Her personality was fun, spunky and spontainous. Which is why I’m not shocked she didn’t call and just came here. She was the most caring person in the family. When we are together it’s hard not to find a smile on our faces. Sometimes I wish it was like that with my mom.
