XX. Night

"Okay, I'm going to show you something new today," Viola spoke up the moment I walked out the back door. I gave her an odd look and leaned against the patio table, waiting for her to continue. "I'll demonstrate, then I'll explain what you have to do."

Within seconds, I was shocked speechless. Unsure whether it was the deja vu or the fact that I finally understood what had been happening back when I first got into this mess, I gaped at the little lilac hummingbird in front of me.

"What the fuck?" I whispered, watching as she reappeared as her usual self. I shook my head, blinking rapidly.

"Only pure Sirens of the original eleven families can do it. I know, it sounds like it would be everyone because that's a lot of kids, but it really narrows down when incest will kill a Siren and 'pure lines' only come from within those eleven families. There's about five of us that can do this." Viola sat down in the metal chair next to me and I continued to stare at the ground.

"Explain to me how this works," she looked at me with a stern face, "please." Giving me a sweet smile, she stood back up and pulled me along with her.

"So, your creature is usually a representative of your more dominant bloodline and, as far as Daniel and I know, there's no record of your bloodline. We don't know if you'll change and, if you do, what you'll be." Viola explained, pacing back and forth without giving me eye contact.

I nodded and waited for her to continue. She stopped pacing and took a deep breath before facing me again.

"So, what you have to do is focus on your inner self. Really just imagine your 'soul' taking its true form." She stepped back, standing on the edge of the concrete. I nodded again, closing my eyes. I did my best to steady my breathing and focus on my 'inner self'.

When I reopened my eyes, I felt a bit unsteady, but no different. Viola, on the other hand, was staring at me with an expression of awe on her face. I raised an eye at her and opened my mouth to ask what she was staring at, but heard the funniest thing.

A harsh caw-like sound emitted from my throat and I flinched. Whatthefuck?

"You're a fucking blue jay. Or I should say a red jay. You're fucking red. Like bloodred. This is so weird. Okay, just imagine yourself being human to change back. I usually him that song from TheLittleMermaid. You know, I wanna be where the people are.." She giggled a little and gave me a big grin. I sighed internally and closed my eyes, following instructions.

I felt my hair tickle my face and knew I was back to normal. When I opened my eyes, Viola was turned away from me. I glanced down to make sure it wasn't like those werewolf stories where I'm naked. Nope. Allclothed.

"Now what?" I chewed on my lip and waited for Viola to turn around. After a couple minutes, she did but she didn't say anything. "Vi?"

"Um, we're done for today. I need to speak with Daniel. Do you-" She shook her head, "Never mind. I'll see you on Saturday." With a flick of her hand, she was flying away as a hummingbird, leaving me confused and frustrated.

"Where's Viola?" Alex's voice spoke up from behind me at the doorframe. I turned around with a nice smile.

"She had to go. But, look who's talking to me." I raised an eyebrow at her, dropping the smile. She looked down at her feet and let out a hefty breath.

"I woke up feeling sick and I didn't feel like talking much to anyone. I'm sorry," She made eye contact and gave me her best look of regret. I dropped my crossed arms and nodded, not feeling like arguing.
