XIX. Storm

Sixth period came around in the form of heaven. I had been placed in theater and I couldn't be happier. The day had gone by without any major bumps in the road, but I knew I wasn't going to enjoy my first or second period classes ever. Thankful for a break from all of the learning of my day, I entered the theater room with a smile on my face. I introduced myself to the teacher, glad she was younger. She had a kind face and seemed a bit quirky, but I think that's expected of somebody who teaches the arts.

"Have you done any acting before?" She had a bright smile that just made you want to smile back.

"A few times throughout my life, but nothing too big." I laughed a little, leaning against her desk.

"Well, I hope you enjoy this class. What grade are you?" She cocked her head to the side, looking down at her list of students.

"I'm a Junior." I fiddled with the strap of my bag, shifting my weight from one foot to the other.

"Okay, well we have auditions at the end of the year for my advanced class that you are more than welcome to try out for. You can just take a seat in the front row of the theater and watch. The class is just finishing up their most recent assignment. They had to write their own large group play. There are three groups, so you'll see one today, tomorrow, and Wednesday." She pointed towards the front row when she offered me a seat and I thanked her before taking a seat and putting my bag in my lap.

The group that went on today made me laugh more than I expected to. Nobody really talked to me aside from one girl with short pink hair. After about twenty minutes, I figured she would become my go to friend for this class.

I met up with Alex and Theo at her locker after my final class. Alex linked arms with me and Theo as we walked out to his car. She asked me about my day and I gave her a brief description of my day. It wasn't very eventful for the most part and I was glad for a calm first day.

In the car, Theo told Alex about some girl in one of his classes and I zoned out, not bothering to try and keep up with a conversation about an unknown person. When we got home, he hugged her and waved goodbye to both of us before driving off.

Thankfully I hadn't received any homework today, but Alex had an assignment for math class. I decided to go see if Michael wanted to do training with me while Alex was working. I found out that she only trained on Tuesdays and Thursdays when Viola or Daniel is working with me. We trained for about two hours before he decided it would be alright for me to go relax and hang out with his daughter. The training was horrible, but it was tiring. I had to focus a lot when it came to using my abilities. I didn't call them powers because most of it wasn't magic. It was agility and skill.

"How'd training go?" Alex asked me when I flopped down on the bean bag chair in the middle of the room. I mumbled an incoherent response and sighed loudly, dead weighting it. The room stayed silent aside from the quiet sound of the tv. Eventually, I fell asleep for a bit.

I was only asleep for about twenty minutes before a pillow hit my face and I shot awake.

"What the hell?" I snapped at Alex, grasping my head, trying to stop the spinning from shooting up too fast.

"Sorry, you weren't responding to your name." She laughed, obviously far from sorry. I glared at her and she stopped laughing, sending me a partially sincere sorry face.

"I wanted to know if you wanted to go to a party on Friday." She sat up and put her chin in her palms, elbows resting on her knees.

"Sure. Why the hell not?" I shrugged, relaxing now that the room wasn't spinning anymore. I yawned and stretched my arms out, waking up completely from the nap I took.

"Cool, its at Theo's, so it'll be kind of wild. I'll tell my mom its just a group hang out. She'll tell us not to drink and drive. The usual." She laughed a little and I shook my head at the lack of concern of the situation, amused.

"Cool. Can we play a game or something?" I nodded my head towards her Xbox and she nodded, moving to grab a game and set the system up.

"Just don't cry when I kick your ass at whatever we play."

"Trust me, the only one crying will be you." I smiled cheekily at her and she laughed, turning back towards the Xbox without another word.

"How the hell did you do that?" Alex nearly screamed. I turned towards her, giving her my most innocent look of curiosity.

"Do what?" My voice was coated in sickeningly sweet mock-innocence and I could barely keep myself together. She glared at me, refusing to respond and I busted out laughing. When I calmed down enough to get up, I threw myself on her bed next to her and shook my head.

"I told you so." I grinned at her even though she was ignoring me and let out a deep breath. Relaxing back into her mattress, I felt myself drifting in and out of consciousness. Eventually I simply fell asleep and I'm pretty sure that's the best sleep I've had since I got there.

When I woke up, I was tucked under Alex's arm, pushed close yet comfortably in between her and the wall. I craned my neck around her to look at the alarm clock. It was nearly two in the morning and I didn't have the energy to move. Settling back down into her arms, I shut my eyes and got comfortable.

The bed was empty when I woke up. There were a few blankets laying on the floor in a pile with a pillow that weren't there when I woke up earlier and Alex was nowhere to be found. I sighed, completely aware that she was going to play this off like she slept on the floor and nothing happened. Nothing happened anyway. We cuddled. This is stupid.

I got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast, not bothering to deal with Alex or her obvious awkwardness. I ended up sitting at the curb for about ten minutes before I even saw her for the first time that morning.

Theo pulled up, looking sullen as ever, and I already knew today wasn't going to end well at all. I popped in my headphones and started blasting whatever came on my iPod, just trying to avoid as much socialization as possible.

Sometime at lunch, my phone started ringing. I paused my music and pressed answer without processing the caller ID.

"Hello?" I moved away from the noise and towards a tree to sit under and talk to my mystery caller.

"Hey, Adriette. I haven't talked to you in a while. What's going on? How are you?" Mae's sweet voice startled me, a dull ache in my chest becoming more noticeable now that the cause was being brought back to my attention.

"Um, hey. Everything's alright. I'm just at school. What about you? Shouldn't you be in class or something?"

"Oh, I stayed home today. I didn't feel like socializing much." She laughed quietly and I smiled a bit at the sound.

"Oh, I didn't either. I've been anti people all day." I fiddled with the bracelet on my wrist, listening intently for her response, unaware of my surroundings.

"Why'd you go to school, then?" Somehow she always managed to sound nice and rude at the same time and it kind of drove me nuts.

"Eh, I care about my academic life, unlike some people." I laughed awkwardly, partially wishing the phone call would end soon.

"Shut up, I care. Kind of." I rolled my eyes at her lame attempt at defending herself and let out a sigh.

"I have to go to class. You can call me later or something." I glanced around, uncomfortable lying to her. I had a good ten minutes left.

"I'll text you, okay?" She didn't wait for a response, just hung up. I set my phone down, partly happy and partly sad. I missed her, but I didn't really have the same feelings anymore. It was odd. I had liked her for so long, but my heart moved on so quickly.

I got up and went looking for Alex.
