*Jack x Nurm. Requested by toyfunfox*

*Jack's PoV*

I paced around my shop, anxiety swirling in my stomach. The ring box felt heavy inside my pocket.

"I'm not sure I can do this." I breathed, rubbing my face. Jess placed a hand on my shoulder.

"C'mon, it'll be fine! What's the worst that could happen?" She said cheerfully. I glared at her.

"Rejection. That's what!" I snapped, continuing to pace.

Jess sighed. "You and Nurm have been together for years. I doubt he'll say no. And if he does, your probably gonna be the only one to understand what he said." She pointed out.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Just... This is a lot harder than I thought it would be." I groaned, sitting down and putting my face in my hands.

"Look, you've been wanting this for a while, and I'm sure Nurm has too. Just take him to a nice, secluded spot, pop the question, and be done with it." Jess advised. I took a deep breathe to steady myself.

"Okay. Where do you think I should do it?"

"If you can, the place where you first met. That'll make it more memorable." She hopped off her perch on a table, stretching. I thought for a moment.

"I think I could make that work. But I don't know what the area looks like now..." I trailed off. Jess smiled.

"Well then we should go check it out! You remember the way?" I smirked, starting towards the door.

"Internal compass, Jess. I can get us there." I paused.

"How do we keep Nurm from finding out?" I asked, turing back to her.

"He's busy helping Radar with planning out the new wall defenses." I raised an eyebrow in surprise.

"He speaks villager?"

"Some. They use sign language to communicate."

"Huh. Okay then." Jess grabbed the doorknob.

"Alright, let's stop wasting time and go see the spot!"

I led Jess to the spot where I first met my villager companion. Vos, Sammy and I had been running from skeletons, and took refuge in a well - placed village, where Nurm lived as a mapmaker. We'd been adventuring buddies ever since.

The village wasn't that far from Beacontown, it only took about 30 minutes, 15 if on horseback (which we were).

When we got there, I was dismayed to see the village had been abandoned. There were no people, no items.

"I don't understand! How could an entire village disappear?!" I shouted in frustration, stomping my feet. Jess placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, we'll figure it out later. But in case you forgot, you want to propose tonight, remember?" I sighed, shoulders drooping.

"Yeah, I remember. Any suggestions?" Jess grinned.

"Yeah, I think I have a good idea." Jess led me to a clearing a few minutes away.

It was honestly quiet beautiful, with long grass, a few scattered rocks, and a small stream on the far side.

"It's perfect." I stated. Jess grinned.

"I knew you'd think that. Now let's go get ready for your special night!" She squealed, taking my hand and dragging me back to town. My anxiety was battling for control with my excitement. I had been waiting for this for years, and it felt surreal that it was actually happening.

I hoped that I wouldn't screw this up.

*A while later*

I waited in the clearing, the ring box heavy in my pocket. Jess had left me here to get Nurm, who still had no idea what was about to happen. I forced myself to breath, a million different outcomes running through my head. My mind cleared when I heard Nurm approaching.

"Hey Jack. Jess said you wanted me to meet you here? To talk?" He stated, moving to stand a few feet away. I gulped and nodded, my hand having a death grip on the ring box.

"Y - yeah. I wanted to ask you something." This was it. I wondered if he could hear my heart trying to escape my chest. I took a deep breath.

"Now or never." I thought, kneeling down and pulling out the ring.

"Nurm, will you marry me?" I asked, looking up at his shocked expression. He was silent for so long that I was worried that he would reject me. Then, he leaped forwards, knocking both of us back.

"Took you long enough, tough guy." He laughed, knowing he had scared me.

"Ha -ha. Please get off." He did, and I'd never been happier in my entire life.
