"Ey, spider boy I heard that you were coming and I have some questions-" A darkskined girl with long braids is walking towards us, pausing when she looks up from her tablet and sees us on the floor in a weird semicircle of tall women (and a toddler). "I have some more questions. Oh, and lunch has been cancelled. Some stupid old white man is demanding access to vibranium. And my brother has to deal with it."
Everyone looks pretty confused still, except Morgan, who has run up to her and asked if she has any games on her tablet. And Pepper too, I guess, since she looks kinda likes she's in pain after Morgan asked.
After Shuri explains, leading us to a small (by palace standards) room with 3 tables facing a longer one. The setup almost reminded him of the home ec kitchen, except with better technology.
The woman who had been sitting down by the long table jumped up and clapped, smiling when she saw us. "You are visiting Wakanda, I am practicing to visit you. Uh, I am teaching.. um, make food?"
"Cooking."
"Yes! That's the um." she mumbles a curse under her breath (at least that's what it sounded like) and goes to grab the baskets that're beside her.
She gestures for us to follow, and we all, except Aunt May, since Pepper is helping Morgan, grab a basket.
With her instruction we place one on each table, and we get into teams. "I wanna be on Spiderman's team! He's the coolest."
Aunt May laughs, "We'll he's better at coking than I am. With pancakes at least."
Once we're all sorted out she explains that she's learning English so she can work with the Wakanda centre in New York City, teaching how to make a traditional Wakandan meal.
"You're each making a whole meal so we're going to eat one and give the rest to families in need... as long as it's edible."
Hold on, there's poverty in Wakanda? "I though everyone here was like, 100% okay and stuff."
"We wish. But people, ah, get more help here to get... better? Like food." The woman, Ibe she said her name is, pulls out a page of printed out instructions from her basket, and we follow.
She reads off the first instruction, going around and showing us how to tell when the lamb has been cooked properly, and I have to ask for help to figure out if the onions caramelized or not.
And Morgan poured in way more paprika than the recipe called for, which- thank goodness- Ibe said should be fine.
After a couple hours and enough trash talk between Shuri, MJ, and me (Morgan contributed 'butthole' to mix) to create a dump, Everything is finally done.
And WOW is that a lot of food. And Ibe says that they all should be fine.
*not my recipe, there's a link to the actual one down below. All credit goes to Nnedi Okorafor.
