"You feel so dull yet to some,
you shine like heaven on earth and taste
brighter than the moon."

In the midst of the fight, I holler at Tess, "Duck!" I shoot the bald douche in the arm, and his gun falls to the ground as a result of the pain and impact. My aim swings instantaneously, the next round lands between his eyes. I whirl around to find a rifle pointed at me, but he collapses with a knife stuck between his eyes. With puzzled eyes, I look at Xavier. He shrugs, his voice cool. "Felt like using my knife," he says.
I roll my eyes as I observe the third guy deciding whether to fight or flee as Xavier shoots down his friend. I shot him twice without giving much thought to where, knowing that he would die either way. I crouched down next to Tess and cut the wire around her wrists, pulling the cloth from her lips afterward. As I watch her rub her wrists and then her nose with her sleeve, I try to hide my concern. "Can you tell me what happened?" I inquired.
She stares at me with a knowing look on her face, realizing that I didn't want Xavier to view me as anything other than who I was. She remains silent, and I turn away, my gaze falling on a nearby body. As I assist her to her feet, my gaze is drawn to the emblem visible through his shirt. Xavier stands behind me as I approach the body. I looked at him, then at the man he was battling, who was now lying in a pool of blood with a broken neck. When I raise my brow at Xavier, he tilts his head, as if to say, "What did you expect?" I return my attention to the man's physique, reaching down to lift his sleeve. I straighten up at the reveal of the full tattoo.
No.
No.
As my eyes come into contact with Tess's honey-colored ones, my head spins. Not her, not her too. I can't allow him to take her as well. I can't.
"They came out of nowhere," she sniffles. "They attacked me not long before you arrived," she recounts with a little crack in her voice, as if she is only now realizing what has happened to her. Her head drops low as she looks away, "I'm so sorry, Serena, I tried to beat them off and failed."
No.
Flashback
"Ah, what a relief to see you haven't changed, " he smirks as his eyes fixate on mine.
"Cut the nonsense. What do you want? " I respond, rolling my eyes.
"Nothing for now," he says, "but I'd suggest enjoying your time until then," he adds backhandedly to both me and Nico.
