Peter was clueless on how to do the second step. He was usually shy and opposite of what he felt when he started step one, he now didn't feel as confident. He didn't want to befriend just anyone; he wanted to befriend Y/N. He didn't know how to befriend her, so he sought help from MJ.
People find it weird to go to their exes for help, but Peter and MJ were different. They're close friends. The bonus part? MJ was Y/N's best friend. MJ could help him. So when he arrived at school the next day, he went straight to MJ who was busy getting her things from her locker. She didn't have to look at who it was because she already knew.
"What's up, loser?" MJ asked.
"Hey- Wait. How'd you know it was me?" Peter stammered. MJ looked at him and shrugged, "I can smell your cologne. It smells like baby powder. Is it a baby's cologne?"
"...No." Peter hesitated.
"Whatever." MJ closed her locker. "What do you want?"
"This might sound crazy-"
"No, it won't. I know what crazy is and whatever you're about to say won't be crazy." MJ smugly said. She added in a whisper, "You being Spider-Man is crazy."
Peter stared at her and shook his head. He cleared his throat, "Anyway, I want to be friends with Y/N."
"You were so mean to her. Why do you want to be friends with her now?" MJ asked protectively as she squinted and eyed Peter carefully. "What do you want from her, Peter? Are you hiding something? What are you hiding?"
Peter visibly gulped. After all this time, MJ still made Peter nervous. "I-I, uh, I just want to, y'know."
"No, actually. I don't know." MJ said. "Spit it out, Parker."
"I just- I want to be friends with her because... because I want to make up for all the times I've been mean to her. I need your help because I have no clue how to do that. You know her better than I do. So, how did you become friends with her? Did you ask if you could be friends with her?" Peter rambled.
MJ stared at Peter with a blank expression for a minute before she opened her mouth and said, "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one."
"I-I'm sorry, what?" Peter furrowed his eyebrows.
"C.S. Lewis said that. That quote is from him. That's how I became friends with Y/N." MJ told him.
"I'm lost. I don't get it." Peter bit his lip nervously.
MJ rolled his eyes, "Dumb-ass."
Peter shrugged.
"The quote basically means that the moment you find something in common with someone, friendship starts. That's how I became friends with Y/N." MJ explained.
