I wake up early, wanting to avoid running into Draco in the common room. I quickly get dressed, put my books in my bag and head to the Great Hall for breakfast. When I get there I see Hermione sitting at the Gryffindor table reading. I go over and sit across from her at the table. "Good morning." I say smiling over at her. "Morning, how was your first night here?" She asks, looking up from her book. "Well Draco is an out right ass, but other than that it's been okay." I say letting out a sigh. "Just ignore him, he's like that to everyone." She says, shaking her head a little. "What class do you have first today?" I ask hoping I'll have someone I can sit with. "Charms, you?" She asks, my smile falls. "I have Potions." I say frowning. "Oh I think Ron has Potions first." She says looking excited for me. "Thank God! At least I'll know one person in there." I tell her, looking around the Great Hall as it gets a little busier and louder as more students come in. I see Hermione smiling at someone, I turn to see a girl with long red hair making her way towards us. "Ginny, this is Kaylee. She transferred here from Ilvermorny." Ginny sits down next to Hermione and smiles at me from across the table. "You're Ron's sister aren't you?" I ask smiling back. "She's our sister too." I hear two voices saying in unison behind me. I turn to see two boys, twins actually. "Hiya I'm Fred and this is George." One of the boys say to me as they sit down next to me on the bench. "Hi, it's nice to meet you both." I say turning my head to look at them. "Slytherin eh?" George says looking down at my robe. My smile fades as I come back to the reality that I'm not in Gryffindor with everyone else. "Oh stop teasing her would you?" Hermione says, giving them a glare. "It's okay Hermione, but yes I'm in Slytherin. Still shocked about it honestly." I say shrugging my shoulders. "Ah not to worry, we can all be friends still. George had a crush on a Slytherin girl last year." Fred says laughing and George pushes his shoulder playfully. I laugh at the two of them going at it. "Classes will be starting soon. I hope to see you later in one of them Kaylee." Hermione says as she stands up from the table. The others slowly follow her. I grab a piece of toast and hurry off to find where my Potions class is. When I get there the classroom is fairly empty with only a few students. I find a seat near the back of the room, turning around every time I hear someone come in hoping to see Ron. My stomach drops when I turn and see Draco strolling in. He sits down at the same table as me, a few chairs away. "Great you're in this class." He says glaring at me, I ignore him and roll my eyes. I turn to the back of the classroom when I hear a group of students come in, my eyes scanning for that familiar red hair. I spot Ron and we make eye contact, a smile coming across my face. Feeling relieved I wouldn't be alone in here. I let out a deep breath as he sits down next to me, in between Draco and I. "As if this class wasn't going to be bad enough with her, now you're here Weasley?" Draco spits as Ron gets his book out. "Shut up Malfoy." Ron says, not even looking over at him. Before Draco can say anything else Professor Snape comes striding in, telling us to open our books and begin making the potion listed on the page. Goyle comes in late and sits down next to Draco, Snape not even saying anything to him about being late. Ron and I start working on the potion quietly, I try to drown out Draco's voice as he sits there talking not doing his school work. Snape makes his way around the classroom inspecting everyone's work. He stops at our table and looks in our cauldron as I'm stirring it. "Very good Miss Scamander and Mr Weasley." I smile as I continue stirring it. "Class is dismissed, don't forget about the assignment due at the end of the week." Snape says as everyone hurries to put their things away. The next few classes drag on as I don't know anyone in them. My next and last class of the day is Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid. I'm looking forward to this one even if there isn't anyone I know in there. I make my way down towards Hagrid's hut where I see a group of students already gathered. I let out a sigh as I spot Draco's bright platinum hair amongst the group. Hagrid puts us into pairs and my stomach drops when I hear him say I'm partnered with Draco. I roll my eyes at him as he smirks at me from across the group, slowly striding towards me. "Of all people I'm stuck with you." Draco says as he gets closer. "I'm not happy about it either." I say rolling my eyes and crossing my arms in front of me. "This year in your partners you will be caring for a very special creature." Hagrid says as he holds up a pink creature. "A Murtlap." I say under my breath. Even though I'm partnered with Draco, I'm still looking forward to this assignment. "They're just babies now, but you will both take turns caring for and raising them." Hagrid continues explaining. "That thing is hideous." Draco says to himself, but I just ignore him. Hagrid hands out the cages with a Murtlap inside. Draco takes the cage from me and opens it, sticking his hand inside. Seconds later the Murtlap has its teeth sunk into Draco's hand. He screams as it bites him. "Get this bloody thing off me!" He yells waving his hand around. "Hold still!" I snap, grabbing his arm. I gently remove the Murtlap and put it back in its cage. Turning back to Draco to look at his hand, red blood dripping onto the ground. I reach into my bag and pull out a vile of liquid. "Now hold still, this is going to sting." I say firmly, still having a tight grip on his arm. I put a few drops onto the bite and watch as his skin stops bleeding and heals instantly. "What the hell is-" Draco begins to say but trails off as I feel his body go limp, I try and hold his weight to gently lay him on the ground. Hagrid comes rushing over and picks him up taking him to the hospital wing. "You lot wait here." Hagrid says looking at the students. "Except you Miss Scamander." He says looking down at me. I nod my head and quickly follow him. Pomfrey comes rushing over to the bed that Hagrid lays Draco on, I grab a chair and sit next to the bed. "He should be fine thanks to Miss Scamander's quick thinking. It was a Murtlap bite, he should be awake in a few hours." Hagrid tells Pomfrey. He puts a hand on my shoulder, I turn to look up at him giving a smile. I sit there and wait until Draco wakes up, feeling a bit guilty because of all my knowledge on these creatures and not being able to do better to help Draco even if he's an ass to me. He starts to stir in the bed, I look up from the floor I was staring at to see Draco has opened his eyes and is looking around. "Kaylee? Wh-what are you doing here? What happened?" Draco asks confused as he realizes where he is. "You got bit by the Murtlap, you'll be fine. I healed your wound quick enough that you won't have any lasting side effects." I say giving a small smile, still feeling bad for him. "Yo-you helped me? Why?" He asks, his eyebrows furrowing together. "I'm an ass to you." He continues. "I know you are, but it doesn't mean I won't help you when you need it. You might be an ass, but I'm not." I say looking straight at him. "I umm-" he stammers. "Thanks." He says as he sits up in bed. Pomfrey comes back and tells us we can leave now. We make our way out of the hospital wing. Draco storms off without saying another word to me. I make my way up to send an owl to my parents. I'm nervous to tell them I was sorted into Slytherin, but they deserve to know. I quickly write the letter and attach it to the owl, watching it fly off into the distance until it's no longer visible. I head back down the stairs to go to the Great Hall for dinner, I see Blaise sitting at the Slytherin table. We make eye contact and his face lights up, waving me over to come sit next to him. "How was your first day of classes?" He asks his mouth full of food. I laugh quietly and shake my head. "It was okay I guess. Could've been worse." I say shrugging my shoulders, a grin spreading across his face. "I heard you saved Draco when he got bit by a Murtlap." He says laughing, I join in laughing but jump when Draco slams his hand onto the table a few people down from Blaise and I. "Shut the fuck up Blaise. I didn't need her help." He spits as he takes a seat. "A lot more than just fainting would've happened if I hadn't done anything as quickly as I did. What? Are you embarrassed you were saved by a girl?" I say laughing and shaking my head at how arrogant he is. He doesn't say anything, just reaches to the middle of the table to put food on his plate. "Nice one." Blaise whispers, winking at me. I quietly laugh and finish my food. "I'll catch you later Blaise." I say, standing up from the table. I make my way out of the Great Hall and towards the Slytherin common room. I find some where quiet to sit to work on Snape's assignment. I don't have much alone time before Draco is bursting through the door. I let out a sigh knowing my peace and quiet has come to an end. He walks past me, looking over my shoulder but then stops in his tracks. "Is that Snape's assignment?" He asks moving closer to look at my papers. "Yeah why?" I say, not acknowledging him as I continue my work. "Can you give me the answers?" He asks, sitting down on an arm chair next to mine. "Why the hell would I do that? After the way you've been treating me, hell no." I spit, looking over at him in shock he even had the audacity to ask. "You know maybe if you weren't such an ass people would want to be around you." I say raising my eyebrows. He lets out a sigh, "look I'm sorry okay? I-I'm just not use to people being nice to me like you were earlier in class. No one here cares about me enough to do what you did." He says, looking down at his lap, fiddling with his fingers. "I can be a really loving and caring person, I will do anything for those I care about. But I won't stand to be treated the way you treat me. I get you have all these walls up because of who your parents are and what you've gone through. But I'm not like everyone else here at Hogwarts. The sooner you realize that the better." I look over at him still staring at his lap. He looks up at me and gives me a small smile. "I-I'm sorry Kaylee. Can you give me another chance? Can we start over?" He asks, giving me a look I never thought I'd see on his face. He genuinely looked sorry. "Of course we can. How about tomorrow after classes we can work on this assignment together? I won't just give you the answers, but we can do it together." I say looking at him. "I'd like that." He says giving me a small smile. I gather all my things and stand up. "Goodnight Draco." I say turning to head to the stairs to the girl's dorms. "Goodnight." I hear him say quietly as I start up the stairs. I get Jewels out of her cage and set her on my bed while I get changed out of my uniform. I watch as Jewels pulls the gold coin from her pouch that Blaise had given her, she plays with and admires it as it reflects from the light of my bed side lamp. I pick her up and she gently plays with the diamond pendant around my neck that my parents had given me. After a while I put her away and go to sleep.
