Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the views expressed in your recent article about the wolf threat and have to admit that you have included many valid facts, but I would like to provide further insight on this hotly debated topic.

Imagine if chicken or carrots were going extinct, would us as modern-day humans be able to survive this? The answer is yes, we would because we have so many different varieties of food all stocked in supermarkets. If there were no carrots, we would eat beans, lettuce, spinach or some other vegetable out of the millions available. If there was no chicken, we would eat beef, fish or some other type of protein. Some of us have categorised ourselves into vegans and vegetarians, but most people are still able to digest all or most types of vegetables and meat. We won't die of starvation. However, if this happened to us in the 1700's in a place where most people grew carrots or had chicken farms then this would affect the population in that area greatly. People would be malnourished and die of starvation. This is simply because in that area the main source of food is chicken and carrots. Everything else is  scarce . This same principle applies to wolves.

In an area where there is sheep farming a wolf's main source of nutrition is sheep. Wolves don't know the negative impact they have , and besides, or what else they should  prey on? They -like other animals- follow their instincts. Moreover, these massacres have started recently; after farmers started to abandon their pet dogs, so wolves aren't to blame. Wolves and dogs follow their natural instincts, sometimes even interbreeding to produce ferocious offspring, but man is to blame. It is true that hundreds of sheep are dying and that sheep farming might not exist in a few years' time, their culture and traditions to many more generations.

The loss of wolves will create a massive imbalance to the ecosystem so they should be protected, not hunted.  I hope we can all take responsibility and save this once endangered species.
