Donald sat down in his battle-torn office. He had successfully defeated Ronald P. Christian, yet it did not feel like a true victory. He beat the battle, but it did not at all feel like he won the war. There was a looming sense of doom and gloom in the air still, even though Ronald was now no more. And that's when he noticed it. It was a sound from outside, one that was faint yet easily distinguishable from the sounds of fire crackling and burning around the dilapidated campus grounds.
A single cough.
He burst through the walls, flying through the sky until he found the source of the sound - a student was outside Gage Hall and coughing up a storm. He reached into his pockets to pull out his D20 and uttered a soft curse, realizing that he left it on the ground by Haggerty. He landed gently nearby the student, not wishing to get too close because he did not know what was afflicting them.
As he did so, the student turned to face him. Their face was blue as they were clearly striving hard to get oxygen into their lungs. For some reason unbeknownst to him, a new sickness seemed to be affecting this student. They reached out to him, their eyes pleading for help - but it was too late. They disappeared, their form breaking down into dust which was swept into the wind. Donald had no time to take this in and process what was happening, however, because the moment this happened was when he realized other students were being affected as well.
He flew around campus in a hurry, taking every student that he could who was showing the same signs like the one from before and freezing their bodies using his gem powers. The rest of the students were moved off the campus, sent home to be safe from whatever was going on.
Once this process was done, his phone beeped. He took it out and saw a message from his king, Governor Cuomo. "Donny, you've got to help your students. Every other SUNY school seems to be getting affected by a new virus from China. I need you to investigate and solve the issue. The world of SUNY needs you."
Donald quickly typed back a reply. "Yes, Your Excellency, King Cuomo. Consider it done." He then took off flying westward towards China. As he stopped in various states along the way to rest his wings, he noticed that the virus was being spread everywhere, not just in the world of SUNY. People were hacking and coughing, rendered unable to breathe properly due to the effects of this new virus. He shook his head in shame as he witnessed all of this happening.
"I could have been there for them. I could have been there for everyone. But like a fool, I was ambushed and trapped. This is my fault. I must fix it," he thought to himself, his eyes welling up slightly with tears.
After a few more days of flying, he managed to make it to the coast of California. In front of him was the Pacific Ocean, and beyond that was his destination: China. "Let's do this." he said to himself as he assumed the form of Hugo the Hawk and spread his wings.
