Her father had fostered children from all around the isles, and that led to Charlotte knowing the York brothers since she was a girl. She may have Lancastrian blood due to her mother, but her father was a supporter of the Duke of York and her own fate was already closely entwined with the Yorks. No matter what, she was York, even if it meant going against her mother's family, supporting those who would seek to depose her uncle and cousin.
She gave her heart away and that led to heartbreak as it so often does, when her love never returned from the war. After two years isolated in the North, she returns to the South and enters Westminster again, this time a York instead of a Lancaster court.
Nothing could have prepared Charlotte for meeting Edward again. When she last saw him, she was a girl. Now, she is a woman. All but a widow and she realizes the spark between them, the connection they instantly have. She tries to avoid him, to limit their interactions but King Edward would have none of that. Despite her better judgement, she falls for him as he does for her and starts beginning to imagine herself as his queen.
Charlotte finds herself in the world of courtly intrigues, doing her best to keep her sisters safe where political feuds easily become bloody, all the while trying to keep her relationship with the king a secret, wishing they could be together publicly. But, after tragedy strikes and she returns to court, she realizes she would never be his in public. For he had married another. He had set her aside and wed the widow of a Lancastrian knight.
