CHAPTER ONE;
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑— PART ONE
july7,2000

Dear Hasani,

our time together were the best memories I have of my short lived life. You were my first love , my first body and my first friend. You showed me things in life that i never knew existed and I'm so grateful to you for that.

Four months after you left, I found out that I was pregnant. I was lost without you there. I had no idea what to do and I was so afraid. The doctors were telling me that I wouldn't be able to carry this baby full term.

but I was determined. I wanted to leave you with a piece of me. A combination of us, proof of our love in its everlasting state.

"I can't read this ma." Hasani tossed the letter to side. Dropping his head as tears ran down his face. He bit his bottom lip harshly, trying to bite back the sobs that threatened to climb up in his throat.

It had been a year since he got admitted into rehab. Getting strung out on drugs was the last thing he ever expected to do to himself and the women he loved. Till this day, he regrets letting that happen.

That day was going to live on his mind for the rest of his life.

He had been terrified seeing Zazu sitting on the floor with her hand clutching the side of her face. He remembered seeing the stream of tears on her face but the thing he remembered the most, was the fear in her eyes as she stared at him in disbelief.

That same night, he left home and checked himself into rehab.Promising that he would get himself together before he ever showed his face in front of Zazu again.

Today was his first day out. He was officially clean and feeling good about seeing Zazu again. Though he felt that way, he didn't think Zazu would.

The first place he went was home. As badly as he wanted to see Zazu, he had to see his mother first.

He didn't expect to come to a three month old baby.

"Don't tell me Haliki had a baby." He joked as he stared down at the baby sleeping peacefully in her bassinet.

He furrowed his eyebrows when his mother sighed and patted at the spot next to her. "Come sit down baby." She said and he did as told, plopping down right next to her.

"Here." She handed him the letter. He hesitated before gently taking it from her hands.

To Hasani, the light of my life.

"Shh." Heimi rocked her son in her arms as he cried. She held back her own tears as she tried to be strong for her child.

She, herself had been surprised when a pregnant Zazu showed up on her steps with a single duffle bag on her shoulder.

From then on, she stuck with Zazu for the remainder of her pregnancy. She attended every doctors appointment. Every craving Zazu had, she made sure she filled it. It didn't matter what time of the day it was, if Zazu wanted it, She got it.

On the day Zazu went into labor, She handed her a letter and told her to pass it on to Hasani. She had no idea how Zazu knew but it broke her heart when Zazu was pronounced dead after delivering a healthy baby girl.
