Chapter 6:

For the past week Elias hadn't said a single word to me. He hasn't even glanced in my direction. But I know he's there. Watching anyone who comes too close to me. And even though he keeps his distance, I can always see him from the corner of my eye. He is in every single one of my classes. Always sitting just a few seats away.

So close yet so far.

Many people have tried to come up to me and start conversations but with one look at the muscles on my guards, they decide they'd rather stay alive then risk talking to me.

And because of this I haven't been able to make a single friend since arriving here, apart from my roommate Claire. No one wants to hang out with the girl who has Mike Tyson look alike's with her at all times. This is definitely not the way I had planned things to go.

As I'm walking out of the history building and
heading towards my next class, I hear someone call my name. I turn but my view is blocked by Chad's chest as he towers over me.

"Hey! Sophia! Over here!" I can see hands waving over the top of Chad's head and my other bodyguards, Ryan's shoulders, trying to catch my attention.

I glare up at Chad and he sighs as he steps away finally letting me see who was calling me.

I see a cute, tall guy who I instantly recognize from my history class. He sits all the way in the back with his other jock looking friends.

"Hey." He flashes me a white toothy smile. "I just wanted to let you know that we're having a party at my sorority house tonight to get the school year started. It'd be great if you came."

I couldn't do anything but just stare at him. Why would he invite me to his party? No one has even said a single word to me since school started. But I couldn't help feeling excited. I had just been invited to my first ever college party by a cute soccer player.

I bite my lip, thinking. "Umm, thanks. But I have a ton of homework to do so i'll probably just stay in tonight. Thank you though." I do have homework but that's not the real reason why I don't want to go. I don't want to go to my first college party with my bodyguards breathing down my neck.

He gives me a look as if he knows what I'm thinking. "You sure? You'll just be missing out."

I let out a sigh but I smile at him. "Yeah, I'm sure but thank you for the invite. That was really nice of you."

"No problem. But here's my address in case you change your mind." He hands me piece of paper with his name, address, and phone number on it. Hm, the cute soccer players name is Colin.

"Nice to meet you, Colin." He smiles and walks away joining his group of friends.

I head to the library, smiling at strangers who wave and greet me. By the time I leave the library after having studied for hours and get to my dorm it's already 8pm. I walk into my dark room, and shut the door behind me. I knew Claire wasn't gonna be here because she has a class at this time. I reach out my hand towards the wall to turn on the light but before I can, someone steps out from the shadows into the light that streams in through the windows that overlook the patio.

I open my mouth to scream bloody murder but before I can, they put a hand over my mouth.

Panic and fear takes over. All i can think of in that moment is that chilly night in the dark street. I lift my arm and take a swing at their head but they catch it in the hand that isn't covering my mouth, before it can make contact. Taking advantage of the fact that both their hands are occupied, I lift my leg, and knee them hard in their crotch at the same time I hear a familiar voice say, "It's okay. It's me."

They let out a curse in a low voice. Oh no.

I quickly turn on the light and I can finally see who the intruder is. He's bent over gasping for air.

"Elias? What are you doing in my room?"

He holds up his index finger, "Just. A sec." He says in a strained voice. I almost feel bad for him. Almost.

"No, tell me now or I'll scream."

"What the hell is wrong with you?" He says angrily as he finally stands up straight and glares at me.

"What's wrong with me? You're the one who's in my room, in the dark, and you just attack me out of nowhere!"

"I didn't attack you! I just tried to stop you from screaming and attracting the entire school to your room."

"You still haven't answered my question. Why are you in my room?" I demand.

He continues as if I hadn't even talked. "I don't understand why I'm protecting you. Instead I should be protected from you."

I scoff.

"I mean the first time I met you, you almost gave me a concussion, you nearly blinded me, pointed a gun at me and now I'll probably never be able to have children."

"Believe me, I think did the world a favor." I mumble under my breath.

"What?" He asks, but i can tell by the look he was giving me that he heard every word i said.

"I said, what are you doing in my room?" He gives me a look that says he doesn't believe me. But either way, he decides to finally answer my question. "I came up and I found some kids outside your door. I scared them off but I wasn't sure if they had broken into your room or not so I came in just to make sure everything was fine."

"Right, so then you decided to break into my room in order to make sure no one broke into my room?" I ask with raised eyebrows.

"It's not breaking in if I have a key." He says with a smirk as he dangles a key in my face.

My mouth falls open. I shouldn't be surprised, given everything that's happened recently but I am. It makes sense that he would have a key to my room, I mean he is my bodyguard. I'm pretty sure all my bodyguards have keys to my room. But it still makes me uneasy to know that they can just enter my room whenever they wanted. Talk about a lack of privacy.

He probably can see that I'm uncomfortable and creeped out a bit cause he loses his smirk and puts the key back in his pocket. "Relax. It's only for emergencies."

I walk towards my bed and sit down on the edge. I reach in my pocket and take out Colin's paper.

"What's that?" He points to the paper.

I stare down at it, trying to avoid looking in his eyes. "Oh, it's nothing. I got invited to a party but... I'm not gonna go." I can feel his gaze studying me. But I refuse to meet his eyes.

"Why not? You should go. Have fun. I know I probably shouldn't be saying this, but you can't just spend your entire life locked up in your room. I know for a fact that you haven't gone out or even made any friends. You should learn to live a little." I look up at him and I can see the sincerity in his eyes.

Instead of asking any of the hundreds of questions that are spiraling in my mind, I shrug. "I just don't feel like it. And plus I have a lot of homework. I should also keep studying for my test next week. And there's-"

"Soph." He stops my rant. "What's the real reason?" I stay quiet looking back down. "You can trust me. I won't say anything to anyone. Not even your father." He sits down next to me on the bed, keeping plenty of space between us.

I sigh, knowing it's no use lying to him. He sees everything. "I've never been 'normal'. Everyone thinks they know me or they know what's good for me. I've never been able to do what I want to do. It's rather ironic really." I laugh dryly. "I went to that club in Miami to feel like a teenage girl for once. But now... I will never be normal again."

He stays quiet for I don't know how long. Then he looks at me. And i mean really looks at me. "You were never meant to be normal." Then he gets up and walks out without another word.

Claire walks in several minutes later and tells me that there's a sorority party everyone's gonna go to so we're gonna go too. And she won't take no for an answer.

But I don't argue.
