Elise loves reading a good book. She's no stranger to Shakespeare and literature. However, Elise loves venturing to new places as well – although it's not entirely new, she's exhilarated knowing she hasn't been. Her mother and father raised skeptical brows at first but relented later on. Of course, Susannah was disgruntled because their parents wouldn't allow her to go anywhere other than the furniture shop.
Lauren pulls up their driveway as she said she would. Her brother Lucas is behind the wheel, clearly couldn't have the heart to leave his only sister be. "I hope it's not too late to wish you a happy birthday, Elise." He smiles as he climbs out the driver's seat.
She returns the smile. "Not at all."
"We better get going. We have a long ride ahead of us," Lauren instructed from the passenger side.
Nicholas zealously clambers in the backseat. Lucas opens the door for her, and she slides herself in next to Nicholas.
Lauren was not kidding when she said the ride would be long. The road past the neighborhoods she knew since she was a child extended farther away to an entirely different paradise. There were hardly any houses anymore. Instead, pines and oak trees aligned the seemingly endless aisle of the road toward the Mitchells' ranch.
She could smell the pines generously perfuming passersby. Elise wondered to herself how come she never explored this part of Goldsburg. She's lived sixteen years in it and yet there still so much more to it.
"So, you wanna do horseback riding?" Lauren turns to them, grinning widely.
Nicholas chuckles. "I would love to if Elise here says she wants to."
"I never ridden a horse," murmurs shyly.
Lauren grinned even wider. "There's always a room for first times."
Nicholas draped an arm over her shoulders and squeezed her to his side. "She's right, Elise. I've never ridden a horse either."
"Well, okay. I guess we could be a little adventurous."
Lauren clapped her hands in delight to her response. "It will be fun."
Elise rolled down the window and rested her elbow on the ledge. A grove of trees she's yet to figure out of what kind makes vivid and lush greeneries on her side of the window. Then she recalls Lauren telling her their ranch grows myriad kinds of fruits and crops.
They even grow Christmas trees. She was amazed at the thought of seeing Christmas trees with roots still affixed to the ground. She was used to seeing Christmas trees by the fireplace adorned with ornaments dangling at its branches.
The car veered to a bend in the road where a massive gate sets an ownership of the acres of properties. It crawled into the vast main drive. She couldn't help but admire what looked like crossbred flowers that blazoned the entrance. There were neatly trimmed hedges lining both sides of the paved path toward a stately farmhouse.
