Yuuka pulled her phone out of her bag and looked at the time. 10:06. Of course the staff from the other company that were meant to be there were late.

She ended up not thinking much of it. Yuuka knew this was typical. She clicked her pen multiple times until she got eyed by her boss. Eyes that told her it was annoying to listen to.

She clicked it off once more and put the pen down.

An obvious groan left her lips and her boss sighed. Yuuka had never felt so impatient even though it was only a few minutes past the time of the meeting.

Eventually, a staff member knocked on the door and allowed six people from the other company to walk into the conference room.

'Finally,' Yuuka thought, as she opened her notebook and began writing subtitles for her note taking.

The six people sat down and when Yuuka glanced up, she was hit by a flood of memories.

Sat across from her was her ex, Akane.

Akane's pupils dilated as her eyes flickered from the table, to Yuuka's notebook, to Yuuka's eyes. Eyes that had suddenly become glazed over.

Their once calm hearts were now beating very fast.

The two of them tried hard to focus on the meeting, but all Yuuka could do was look into Akane's eyes. Try and work out what she was thinking. Couldn't help but bite her lip.

Akane looked back at her and coughed.

They weren't supposed to now be in their own little bubble, for a number of reasons. It wasn't until Akane was told to stop tapping her pen on her pad repeatedly that she was snapped out of her trance.

Yuuka swallowed the lump in her throat and judged the situation.

The atmosphere was thick with tension and the two of them knew, if they could just get through this God forsaken meeting...

"Sugai-san? Have you got any other comments to make?"

Yuuka almost fell back off her chair. Akane could read her like a book. As usual.

"U-Uh... No. No, I... I don't." The stuttering made Yuuka want the ground to swallow her up whole. Her boss regarded her with narrow eyes, unable to work out why she was suddenly acting like this.

The same question was then asked to Akane.

Akane glanced down at her notepad and tried to find some semblance of coherence in her notes. Too much time was being wasted. Her head snapped up and she simply muttered, "No."

The man leading the meeting nodded his head once and declared the meeting over.

With no hesitation, Akane grabbed her belongings, put her bag on her shoulder and darted out of the room.

Yuuka was close behind as she followed Akane to the lobby.

"Akane! Akane, wait!" Yuuka called out, but the younger woman didn't listen.

"Akane... please!"

Letting out a deep sigh, Akane spun around. They made eye contact.

"What?"

Yuuka was suddenly unsure of what to say. On the way downstairs she had an entire speech planned in her head. One that she was devising in the meeting instead of actually listening.

She then realised she was all on her own.

"H-How are you?"

Akane nearly broke down. She held back her tears. Never wanted to seem pathetic. "Unbelievable. We haven't spoken in over a year and the first thing you want to say to me upon seeing me again is that?" She tutted once and looked at the floor, shaking her head.

Yuuka then randomly found a bit of her backbone. "Well, to be quite honest, I did have more to say in my head."

Akane glanced back up. Folded her arms. "Ah. That's the Yuuka I know. A little bit sarcastic. A little bit sassy. Hand on hip, thinking you're hot shit."

Yuuka licked her lips and crossed her arms as well. Couldn't not let a laugh escape.

Akane rolled her eyes, "Look, it's better if you save your gladiator speech, Yuuka. I have somewhere to be." She began walking again when Yuuka cut her off once more.

"Why did you walk out?"
Akane stopped dead. Felt her blood freeze. She clasped a hand over her mouth. Let her fingers glide over her lips like she was going to try and stop the words from slipping through.

They spilled out regardless.

"Because our personalities didn't match. They don't match."

Yuuka bit the corner of her lips. It was like she already knew the answer, but it made her heart hurt anyway.

She didn't have a way to respond.

Akane turned around quickly and said, "But I guess we'll be seeing a bit more of each other now, now that our companies are merging." She shrugged a shoulder. "Take care, Yuuka."

Yuuka was then left alone in front of the company building, trying to take it all in.

She wanted to scream at Akane, cry at Akane. Maybe take her hand, kiss her, try to make it work.

But there was too much water under the bridge. She knew better than to do that.

Unless she wanted the whole city to flood.
