Chapter 12

Sarah

Sarah could feel her wolf dancing in her mind. If there had been walls in there then it would be bouncing off the damn things. It refused to communicate with her, continuing to wiggle and jump for joy. Pain continued to nag her however as they neared the full moon. She had been laying in the clinic for two days and she had improved a bit. She could feel the barrier between her and her wolf growing thinner with each day. Excitement swelled in her at the thought of fully integrating with her wolf instead of the shadow game they were playing now. To completely communicate with the being that has lived in her all her life. She wondered what it would be like the first time she transformed.

From what she could remember from her lessons before the cage, the first time was extremely painful but after that it was effortless. She and her wolf would become two halves of the same supernatural being. The pain didn't really bother her. She was well conditioned to it. As if in example another wave of pain rolled through her body and Sarah steeled herself against it. Her muscles tightened only a little as the pain left as quickly as it had come.

The door opening caught her attention and she cracked her eyelids swallowing the yelp of pain from the bright light. Datrim walked to her bed and stared down at her. His hand lifted and fluttered over her face as if he was going to pet her. Sarah wanted to laugh at the thought of a werewolf wanting to pet another werewolf but the muscles required to do so just wouldn't respond. His eyes no longer held the anger they had the night she told him she had purposely led the vampire onto pack lands. Nor did they convey the worry and grief his voice had when she was first brought in here. They were soft and compassionate as they roamed over her face.

"My brother will be here this evening." Her wolf stopped dancing and paid attention. The mention of an Alpha was very important to both of their well beings.

"He will decide how to handle you and your friend. I will hold no sway over what happens. I will be leaving in the morning for my own pack, which has been left in the hands of my beta for far too long." His knuckles were white as they gripped the edge of the bed. Sarah wondered if the anguish that flashed across his face was due to him leaving the pack or him leaving her. She wanted to say something, anything really to remove the look of anguish and longing off of his face.

"He's not a bad Alpha, you have no reason to fear him, I promise. Just listen and answer him when you can. If you can. I know your awake in there, I know you can hear me. I have no idea what is wrong and neither does the doc. I'm starting to worry." The words were as soft as a petal on the wind and if she wasn't being very still she would have missed them. He turned to leave but hesitated a moment to place the back of his fingers on her cheek. His body heat blazed through her and both she and her wolf held their breath waiting for something to happen. Sarah wanted him to stay there like that for longer but he soon strode out of the room with strong purposeful steps.

The Alpha was going to be back in a few hours. Her fate would be decided then. She closed her eye against the light and allowed her mind to wander. She had no idea how long she lay there like that when a loud voice boomed through the building demanding to see her. Her heart began to speed up as she tried in vain to temper her erratic breathing. Her wolf was just about losing her mind running in circles panting and chanting about how it's finally here. Fear crept up on her as she lay as still as possible. She cracked her eyes just in time to see a large frame burst into the room stopping short as his eyes fell upon her. Her wolf dropped her front paws leaving her tail high in the air wiggling back and forth. One word came from both of them at the same time.

"Mate."

Sarah felt fear and dread soak through her as the word rebounded through her head. Her mate, her fate selected other half. There was no way she was going to accept a mate. Especially an Alpha. The mere thought of being mated to an alpha sent her mind reeling. Her heartbeat sped up to a pace she wasn't sure she could sustain. She had just escaped a whole pack of overbearing demanding abusive Alphas, and no matter what Datrim had said about his brother there was no way she was going to chance it.
