A parodic holiday, International Talk Like a Pirate Day was created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy) who are from Albany, Oregon.
The idea behind the holiday springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy. A lot of the characteristics associated with pirates today sprung from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island (1883) which popularised things such as peglegs, treasure maps, and parrots.
English actor Robert Newton is considered the "patron saint" of Talk Like a Pirate Day for appearing in films like Long John Silver and Blackbeard with his native West Country dialect that some people believe is the origin of the standard "pirate accent".
As you are out and about on September 19th, don't be surprised if people are saying, "Ahoy Matie," "Avast," "Aye, Aye Capt'n," "Land ho!" "Hornpipe," and many other pirate-like phrases, because adopting a piratey vernacular is a popularised custom on September 19th.
While ordering your coffee at the drive-thru, ask if they have change for a gold bullion. Try testing your pirate language at the library when asking for the location of Moby Dick. The pirate language always fairs well in rough seas. Settle a debate with "I'm right or I'll walk the plank!" When the boss gives you a new project, "Aye, aye, Capt'n," is the correct response.
To polish your persona, practice a swagger, limp or squint. Long days at sea give pirates unique qualities, after all.
How to celebrate?
Well mate, celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day be as easy as a day in the tropic. You simply need to turn up your piratey vernacular, pour a few fruity drinks with umbrellas in them, and gather with friends to celebrate the day in your piratey best! There are songs to be sung and wenches to be clenched, and who can resist a backyard barbecue with grilled pineapple, salmon made by wokkin' the plank, and a perhaps inappropriately large amount of pure sugar cane rum?
Popular websites like Facebook and Reddit have acknowledged and celebrated this day in the past by integrating pirate language and pirate themes in their sites in the past decade.
Talk Like A Pirate Day is comin', are you ready to pirate it up? We know that we are.
