Grace walked swiftly into the room, led by Diego and Luther. She saw Vanya sobbing on the floor, shattered into pieces. Her eyes twinkled with longing tears. Grace simply smiled and put her fingers on Five's wrist. The pulse was definite but faint.
"I- is he... go- going to be... okay?" Vanya cried softly. She held Five's hand tightly.
"He is going to be just fine!" Grace put on her practiced smile and promptly lifted Five in her arms and brought him to the hospital wing. She opened up his shirt and cleaned the wound. She took out the bullet very carefully, so as to not hurt him. Five flinched through his unconsciousness. Vanya sat next to him as Grace finished bandaging the wound.
"There... now Vanya, you just wait. He'll be better in the morning," Grace smiled and walked out. It was just the two of them now. Vanya looked outside the window. It really was dark outside. Now that Vanya thought about it, she was tired. She had dark circles under her red-rimmed eyes and her muscles were aching. Her stomach hurt from crying so much. Just as Vanya laid her head down to sleep next to Five, she remembered the phenomenon she created.
Vanya wasn't 100% sure what happened. She thought it came from within her, but it was crazy to think about. She recalled Five getting shot by the bullet and all her feelings welling up inside her. The memory of Five getting hurt was painful. Tears threatened to fall down her cheeks. She also remembered her heartbeat getting louder and louder until it enveloped her entire being. That's when the rage and fear and sadness poured out of her and exploded into a shock wave. It threw the murderers back but kept her siblings safe.
What does this mean? Do I have powers? I mean, I think I don't. I was never special. But I made that shock wave. I don't understand. I wish Five was awake to help me through this. Before Vanya knew it, she was fast asleep.
Vanya blinked her eyes in a daze. She wasn't sure where she was. Then, she realized she was back at the fight scene with the murderers. Again, she saw the tall, masked man looming over Five's shoulder, ready to shoot him. What was happening? Why was she back here? She knew what was going to happen though. She couldn't move. She saw Five's loving face moments before getting shot. She opened her mouth to tell him to move, but she couldn't speak. She was powerless. Instead of getting shot in the side, Five was shot right between his ribs (oooooo... that's gotta hurt... does it sound familiar to ham ham fans out there?). Five slumped to the ground. Vanya was sobbing and yelling internally. But no one could hear her. She saw a red stain spread across Five's clothes. Five choked on the blood and slowly, painfully, suffered his death. Vanya still stood motionless and speechless. She wanted to yell and cry and kiss Five or help him or do something. Death glazed his green eyes and Five didn't move anymore. Vanya cried and cried and cried. This wasn't real. It couldn't be real. She couldn't save him.
Vanya woke up sobbing and crying. Five was sitting up on the hospital bed.
"Vanya... Vanya... shhh don't cry. What's wrong? Hm? Tell me, why are you crying?" Five stared into Vanya's damp eyes with questioning eyes. His warm hands held her tear-streaked cheeks. Vanya sighed in relief and kissed Five as hard as she could. Five opened his mouth and let Vanya lead him in their dance. It felt so good to be kissed by each other. They kissed for a long time until they were gasping for air. They did it again at least three more times before breaking apart.
" Whoa, whoa," Five hugged her hard and whispered in her ear, " You saved me. I'm here." Vanya couldn't stop crying. She was confused about who she was, what the murderers were here for, and if Five would be okay. Vanya inhaled and exhaled slowly.
" I thought you were gone... I thought that they killed you." Tears jerked at Vanya's eyes again, " I thought you left me..." This had Vanya crying again. Five kissed her hard one last time before grabbing Vanya's hand to get breakfast. Five suddenly remembered. The old man was dead and there were probably still dead murderers hanging around in the house. Then, he remembered the blinding shock wave Vanya threw.
"Hey Vanya," Five said, " How did you throw that shock wave last night?" Vanya shrugged she wasn't sure, but more than that, it was just as bewildering to her as it was to Five.
"I'm not sure. I remember my heartbeat was like a tornado, it was surrounding me. Then it just blew over." Vanya recalled.
"Huh..." Five was confused. It was clear Vanya didn't have powers, but it was also clear that it was Vanya who made that shock wave last night. He pushed it off his mind.
Once again, it was Vanya and Five. Together in this world of injustice.
