Carolyn was woken up in the middle of the night by a heart wrenching sound of glass breaking with force. She jumped out of bed and hurried out to the stairs.
It was the pictures of the family and the kids. They had all fallen onto the stairs and were now in a thousand pieces. The floor was covered in glass. Strangely, no one else had woken up by the sound so Carolyn was alone. She tiptoed down the stairs to prevent herself from stepping on the broken glass. There were hollow knocking sounds coming from underneath her. It came from the basement that the girls had found earlier and echoed through the house. Carolyn found the key to the closet that led to the door to the basement. As soon as she opened the door, the knocking sounds stopped and silence filled the room as well as fear. The inside was pitch black with only a weak shine of a silver chain that hung from the ceiling. She pulled it and a lightbulb went on and lit up the basement.
-Who's there?
Carolyn shouted down to where the sound had been coming from.
-Whoever you are, I am going to lock this door if you don't come out right now!
Silence. Carolyn turned around to exit just as the door suddenly smashed in her face and she stumbled backwards before falling down the stairs. Pain, subdued by the Adrenalin, filled her body and she sat up on the ice cold concrete in agony. The anger had been completely replaced with pure fear but before Carolyn had had time to get on her feet, a red ball bounced down and stopped in front of her. There was an oder. It was sweet as well as sour and it soon became rotten, like a corpse. It was the smell of death, so strong that Carolyn almost gagged in disgust. She starred at the ball before a vase flew just past her head and into the wall and she got up and ran up the stairs. The door was locked, so she banged at it as hard as she could.
-Roger!
She yelled but no one opened. Then the light bulb exploded above her head and the thick darkness blinded her eyes from seeing.
-Roger! Open the door!
It was hopeless to yell so Carolyn fumbled around the floor until she found a small box of matches. The first one went out. She lit a second one and held it down the stairs to where the basement was. She saw nothing for a while, only the darkly lit room, illuminated by the match, then suddenly two hands clapped right beside her, the way it had done when she'd played hide and clap with April and the match went out.
At the same time in Christine and Nancys room, Christine lay fast asleep when something pulling at her leg woke her up. She lay back and closed her eyes again when the force came back and almost pulled her off the bed.
-Stop pulling my legs Nancy!
There was no answer
Christine knew she was pretending to be asleep but she was tired herself, so she lay back down and had almost fallen asleep when she felt two cold hands grabbing her feet and this time, pulling her off the bed and onto the floor.
Christine cried out and quickly crawled up in her bed, staring into a corner of the room that was darkened by the open door.
-Nancy?
She whispered quietly with a shaking voice.
-Nancy wake up.
-Oh, what is it?
Nancy said irritatedly.
-It's behind the door...
-What? There's nothing there.
-It's looking right at us...
Christine was crying silently as she stared into the dark corner. This was when Nancy decided to go into the corner behind the door to prove that there was nothing there.
"Nancy went to the door and stood behind it. Christine had tears in hear eyes"
-See, it's nothing.
-It's standing right behind you...
Christine whispered with tears in her eyes.
Nancy felt something go through her like a wave and she slowly turned her head around to see what was hiding behind her when the door suddenly slammed shut and the girls let out the loudest screams they could master.Roger woke up with a flinch, feeling like the whole house was about to blow up.
-Carolyn? Carolyn!
He ran through the hallway until he heard Carolyn's banging noises from the little closet where the basement was. He unlocked the door and found his wife on the floor.
-The girls!
She exhaled and they both leaped up the stairs. The door was locked and the girls were screaming bloody murder.
-Wait here i have to kick the door in.
Roger said and Carolyn backed away. He tackled it with his shoulder and the door flew open as fast as it had closed. Inside, the girls were crying and Carolyn rushed over to comfort Christine who was the youngest.
-What happened Nancy?
Roger asked.
-Dad, there was something behind the door!
-Is that true Christine?
-Yeah, something grabbed my legs and i fell of the bed.
Christine said between her cries and it wasn't until then that Roger regretted moving into the house. It would be hard to undo what already had been done.
