"What do you mean he LEFT?" I stare at my uncle from across the dining table, fuming. How could he leave without so much as a goodbye?? Tears threaten to come, I fight them back. My uncle sighs, pulling a letter from his coat pocket.
"He asked that I give you this." My uncle slides the letter to me across the table.
My dearest Amelia,
As much as it pains me to write this letter, I fear I have no choice. My enemies that I thought long vanquished have returned. I cannot put you and your uncle in further danger by staying... as much as I long to. The moment we shared last night is one that I will cherish forever as I hope you will. I do so hope that you will not forget me, as I am sure that I will never forget you.
Yours forever,
Niklaus
"That's it.... He really is gone. I know I barely knew him, but we had this.... Connection I cannot explain uncle. He wasn't afraid of me once he realized what I can do." I let the tears come, crumbling up the letter and letting it fall to the ground.
"I know dear. It's an all too familiar heartbreak our family is destined to experience. Your mother didn't want you to know this, but I feel like it's time." My uncle stands, disappearing for a moment in the library. Once he emerges, he carries a book I hadn't seen before and places it in front of me. It was old. The leather was worn and cracked; it had not been open in quite some time. I open it, carefully, and try to make sense of it. Sensing my confusion, my uncle explains.
"You see, Amelia. A long time ago our line was started by the union of two powerful creatures: a werewolf and a witch. Their love defied all odds and was set to unite the two people. On the day of their wedding, an evil witch cast a curse that denied them the happiness they had found. This generational curse appears every time a person is born with your eye color; we can never live in peace. It is said that one day someone will be born that can break the curse; a child that inherited both the werewolf and witch gene. So far that gene has remained dormant; so, you must continue the line Amelia. You are the last. Only you can save us."
2 years later
I wait impatiently outside the courtyard gates, holding my daughter close to my chest. 'He promised he would come. Where is he?' I can hear them getting closer; they were coming for me... and for her. My precious Rose. I study every feature, as I know this will be the last time I see her.
"Oh, my dear Rose..." My lips quiver as I kiss her gently; I feel his presence behind me.
"Klaus..." I whisper, closing my eyes as I turn to face him. He hadn't changed a bit.
"Amelia" He touches my face gently, wiping away the tears. Glancing at the sleeping infant confusion sweeps across my face.
"I need you to take her Klaus.... I don't have much time left." I can see the torches over the horizon now, "Klaus please! You're our last hope. They are coming to take me, and they can't find her here." Klaus takes my daughter out of my arms, his face softening.
"I.... I cannot lose you again. Come, we can all escape together. You do not have to stay here to... die." Klaus holds out his hand, pleading me to take it. A part of me longs to run to him... longs to raise my daughter by his side; but alas, I know that is not my fate. I had known it since the day he left.
"I wish it were that simple. One day, thanks to this child you are saving, a daughter will be born that is both witch and werewolf. She is the only that can stop this.... She holds the key, Klaus. It was not mere chance that we met; I know that know. You must promise to keep her and those that come after her.... Please Klaus do this for me." Before I change my mind, I kiss Klaus quickly and turn towards my impending doom.
